I have a couple of zoom lenses and want to add a Teleconverter. My problem is, which one to buy first for my Nikon lenses.

It's important to know which lenses you have.
Some are not suitable for teleconvertors.

Thanks for your reply, Goofy. I have a Nikon 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 70-300, 50 f1.4, 85, 105, Tamaron 180 & Tokina 150-500. I did check Nkon's website and they said my D4s is compatible with all Nikon lenses/teleconverters.

Not all lenses are compatible with all Nikon teleconverters. If you look at the picture of the Nikon TC-14E III, you can see an element of the TC goes past the lens mount. Some lenses have elements which also protrude past the mount, so the two would make contact, which can damage them.

With your 70-200mm and 70-300mm lenses, there should not be a problem. I notice the image quality reduction with a 1.4x TC, so I wouldn't use a 2x.

This is like shooting fish in a barrel

Google Nikon Teleconverters

find http://www.nikonusa.com/en_US/IMG/Images/Learn-Explore/Photography-Techniques/2012/Teleconverters-Freeman-Alberhasky/Media/en_US_Comp_chart.html

only 3 zoom lenses are shown as compatible with certain nikon TC's (both 70-200's but not your 70-300)

this list is 2 yrs old and so some things may have changed The specific spec sheet for each item should be looked at

The fact that the D4 is compatible with all Nikon lenses and all nikon TCs is not the same as all lenses being compatible with all TC

Large prime lenses seem most likely to benefit from use of a TC

I have a Kenko 2x for the Nikon mount. It works with all of my lenses even those that Nikon's TC will not work with, i.e.: Nikon lens instructions say that it cannot be used with a TC.

I also have a Nikon 2xTC and see no difference otherwise between the 2.

Why 2? - got the Nikon first, then the 80-400,ver.1 and wanted something to work with it, Kenko did/does

I use the Nikkor 2X converter routinely with my 70-200 with quite good results. If used carefully, i.e., tripod, proper ISO and shutter speed, you will see little, if any degradation in image quality.

This is not meant to be offensive but I cannot help but wonder how a person with well over $12,000 in Nikon's most expensive lenses and camera would not be able to quickly Google your tele-converter question....rather than waiting for answers here. Seems if you were not very experienced (as it appears), you would have started with more reasonable equipment. Again, no offense intended....I'm just struck by your question vs. equipment?????

I agree on sticking to the 1.4x teleconvertor. Check the archives as there was a posting in the last 3-4 days about image degradation with the greater mag converters.

I have the Nikon 70-200 vr II f2.8 and use it with Nikon's 2x teleconverter and I'm totally impressed with the results. Nikon D800 on a tripod.

Exactly my setup with similar results! Can't vouch for other brands, but the Nikkor 2X is a winner used properly.

The obvious answer to almost any question posted here would be, "Why not GOOGLE it?"....Personally, I find the discussion and the answers that are generated here much more informative than the dry, textbook answers a GOOGLE search turns up. In some cases, I think that people have already searched for the answer and have either NOT found something they could understand and relate to, or just found the GOOGLE results disorganized and not easily translated into simple talk......As always JMHO...YMMV
