Odd Sized Photo That I want To Print

I have a very odd sized photograph that I want to have printed (17x6). I have tried 3 different labs but they all crop out too much of my photo. Does anyone know of any Online Photo Labs that will print to my size?

It sounds like you are trying to fit a square image into a rectangular frame? Somehow, the proportions of your original are different from those of your desired size, yes? You can tell the lab to print to fill the first proportion, then blade in to the edges, leaving you enough extra material to matte a 6x17. The alternate would be to tell the lab to unconstrain the proportions- This will give you an image that looks like it was viewed thru a distortion mirror at an amusement park. Is that what you want? If your original is of the same proportion as the 17x6 any CUSTOM Lab using an enlarger and easel should be able to produce your image. It won't be done by any lab that only offers fixed size machine prints, which is what you've probably dealt with.

I would suggest you add white space to the photo to make it a standard size for printing.
Check with the lab you want to use, what size they will print that has the largest dimension at or just over 17 inches, then add the white space to make the smaller dimension to fit.
For example 18 x 12 inches.
When you get the print back, just cut off the white space - 1/2" on each short side and 3" on each long side.

My problem is that I want them to print the image on...lets say, 20 x24 sized paper at 17 x 6 and I will trim the excess off.

If you have or know some one that has a 13 x 19 printer. Design what you want in photoshop on a bland and print it and cut it out, or sent me the copy and size, and how many you want, and I can do it for you. Paper fine art, museum etching, photo rag, premium matte, semi gloss, gloss. You name it. Its something for me to do.

This is what I did. Morning Star (Thanks) reminded me to add to the canvas size of my image to match one of their selections which was 24x8, uploaded my photo with added white space, then I was able to crop it down. I ordered 3 prints.

Along with the original image file, submit a small sample image with crop marks added by you, and indicate the exact dimensions of the final print. Any custom printing lab worthy of being in business should have at least one person on its staff with enough basic geometry knowledge to be able to follow these simple instructions.

Try using 13 X 19 paper, trimming it to 19 X 8 (or 19 X 9), matting with a ½ -¾" border on top and sides and framing with a Nielsen-Bainbridge frame.

There are lots of labs that can do this without crazy formatting on your part. sometimes it takes a phone call to figure what annotations they need on the order to accomplish what you want. these guys take online submissions and will ship the prints anywhere in the country. http://www.millerslab.com/ they do great work for pros and advanced amateurs.

They will ALL print it and not crop it out.

It's up to you to decide if you want it to be full bleed (some gets cropped out) or bordered (white space where the extra aspect ratio goes.

here is an example of how Adorama does it.

Costco will print on 20 x30 for about 5.00 use your editor and make the canvas 20 x 30 center the image then you can trim as wanted easy to do in Photoshop elements

Many "print labs" do panoramas. EZ prints is one, they will do 6" tall by whatever length or 12" tall by whatever length.

I am sure some of the other better quality labs do the same.

Look for the panoramic print size in there size listings.

I recently had Adorama print a 36 x19 size print. The closest 'size' to those dimensions that Adorama's options offered was 36 x24, (which I had to select), so I had to place a 36 x24 'canvas' behind the print using Photoshop which made a five inch 'blank' strip at the top, but when I received it, I simply trimmed the excess off, leaving my original 36 x19 print in tact. By the way, I highly recommend Adorama. They did great work printing it and the service was speedy.

Most labs will print to a size that will contain the image and then trim to the picture. eg. 10" x 20" and trim to 6x17. I do it all the time.
