The corners would have distortion that would lead to all kinds of chromatic aberrations.

But, but, how can you have corners in a round image?

If a square or rectangular lens were made it would have corners. Circles have diameters or a rafius. It can have tangents, arcs or cords but it can't have corners. Un less of course the manufacturer took short cuts and cut corners. Would you use a square filter with a square lens. Would square or rectangular be best. Then you could have endless arguments as to which is best. Here is the real reason that lenses are round. They don't want to be square. Ya dig!

Well now, that's easy to answer:
Round pictures would roll out of the frames! :D

Printing would be an adventure. In stead of using paper on a roll you could slice it like a Salami!

Square lenses would look funny.
Would there be a circle of confusion associated with square lenses?

Would a square lens run circles around the competition?

It looks like you are needing to move up to medium format and be done with it. The FX 35mm format is better than most Photogs can process or comprehend. That is why Adobe make the "Big Bucks!" Photographers just don't get it right the first time out, and that includes me also!! Also, you might consider "Large Format" and bypass the whole kit & caboodle! Now your cooking with gas Photog!! LOL

And large format lenses have even more coverage to allow for camera movements such as the following. The film frame is still well within the coverage of the lens in most positions.

People like and are used to rectangular pictures (think oil paintings). As to why cameras have round lenses you have to ask people who manufacture them.

A "Racmanaz special": ask a silly question which has non-silly answers.

Lenses are round because the light comes into them from all angles. A rectangular lens would basically produce a good image in a circle "inside the rectangle". Instead, we get a circular image circle which is then cropped.

Pictures are rectangular because it is much more efficient to produce rectangular paper. Cutting the paper into circles would produce much more waste. Film is rectangular for the same reason. Finally, sensors are cut from circular wafers, but many sensors fit onto one wafer, so those are also rectangular to reduce the wasted area of the wafer.
