Just Fred Loc: Darwin's Waiting Room

Korczak Ziolkowski worked as a sculptor for Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum. He then took on what is currently the world's largest sculpture: The Crazy Horse Memorial near Custer, SD.

Just for perspective, the entire four heads of Mount Rushmore could fit into the space just behind the face of Crazy Horse. The "tunnel" which is the beginning of the space underneath his outstretched arm, is ten stories tall!

It does not look like anything has changed in 15 years. Very nice series!

They haven't gone forward very much In the carving, I was there about 10 years ago and have the same photo's. They must have ran out of funds.

I was there when I was in my early teens, now I'm in my early 70s. The only thing that was there then was the flat top of his outstretched arm. It appears that he is going to have to live a couple of life times to complete the project.

Excellent photos

You are all correct! (And thanks for stopping by and commenting). I am impressed that this is a family "business" that refuses federal money. All funds come from the visitor center, gift sales, etc.

Seven out of ten of Ziolkowski's children work on this project.

I suspect their grandchildren's grandchildren will be working on it, too.

Did you happen to notice the eyeballs on the model? They are horseshoes! A small, but significant detail. :D

Went there with my parents in the early 60's. Takes so long to see any progress, but glad and proud the family does not accept Federal help. Look how well government "help" served the Native Americans. One of my main pet peeves, even from before marrying my lovely Native descent wife.
