Had the same thing happen to me about 6 years ago using whatever version of Windows existed at that time. Happened to be an Iomega. Got all the data copied from my C drive onto it and uses it for several days. Then it intermittently started doing what you are describing. After several days Windows would not recognize the drive at all. I was able to get about 80-90% of my stuff back onto the C drive before it closed down. Then bought a WD and the process repeated itself. This time I was only able to recover about 60% of my stuff. Fortunately non of what I lost amounted to anything more than a "Damn It". That's when I learned enough about RAID and bought a Buffalo 1TB comprised of 4 250GB drives configured with RAID 5. Only problem I've had is the power supply went up and was replaced.

I have a Synology NAS with two 3TB WD Red drives. So far, so good.

When I back up to external drives, I never use backup software because 2 years from now you may need those backups and that software is no where to be found or you forgot what software was used to back the files up. I drag the photos or documents into folders and they just copy over. I know there is no way to schedule backups with this method, but I have time machine and crash plan (cloud storage) for the scheduled hourly backups.

I will copy my important photos and files once a month or so to an external drive, that copy is my actually my 4th copy of the files.

I use a utility called XXCOPY (free)to do all my backups.
There's a paid version which is a little smoother.

xxcopy C:\Files D:\Files /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy C:\Pictures D:\Pictures /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy C:\Files N:\Files /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy C:\Pictures N:\Pictures /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy N:\Pictures O:\Pictures /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy C:\PDF Files O:\PDF Files /backup /S /PB /FF
xxcopy C:\Utilities O:\Utilities /backup /S /PB /FF

The above switches allow only the changed files to be replaced.

D=2nd HD
N=flash drive
O=2TB external USB3 HD
Every app I use saves to C:\Files
I let Win7 Pro save an image every week.

I used to use an external HD on the network, but it was to slow.

Yes, I'm paranoid about protecting my data!

Even if you get this drive to work, would you ever trust it for your backups? If it didn't work 100% out of the box, I wouldn't back up anything to it.

What I didn't mention is that my external drives are NOT back up drives. I use them as primary storage. I use the Buffalo to store document data and I also have a Syslogic 2TB external - uses 1 1TB drives, configured RAID 0 upon which I keep my photographic data. I do have an automatic back-up on my C drive that stores on the Buffalo.
I hope its never tested but I am confident I secure against all but natural disasters. I have an external battery/Surge protection device.

Better sooner than after the warranty expires. Amazon is good about taking returns.

Did you try to contact WD? I have and they have a great customer support staff.

Exactly! I was able to back everything to it, and then it went kablooie (technical term). It's been reformatted and partially wiped with CCleaner.

I recall a program like this from DOS days. I think it was called xcopy. One nice thing about DOS was that you could do just about anything working from the command prompt.

No. I don't like to bother with so-called tech support. Too much waiting, too little support. If the new drive I receive doesn't work, I'll get a different brand or a 3TB. This is my first 4TB, and my first drive failure.

Understand your reluctance, Jerry, but I just bought the same ext backup drive from WD and their support folks were extraordinary! It's a terrific system and I was pleasantly surprised by the tech support....try it, you'll like it!! :) They do a remote access and walk you through what they are doing....it's painless.

It still is. Type "command" in the "search programs and files" box on the Start menu. Then, type "help xcopy". It will be just like the good old days. All the stuff is there.

There is an updated version that comes with Win 7 and 8 called "Robocopy." It has some additional functionality. All three of these utilities will run from batch files. One word of caution. None of these utilities will copy open files, so close all files that you wish to copy.

Jerry, I have to agree with dgswan on this one. I had similar problems with the WD 3T that I installed over a year ago. The tech support guys walked me through it all and with their remote access, solved my problem. I have now used that 3T unit for over a year and never had another problem.

Well, it's boxed and ready to go out tomorrow morning, and a new one will arrive on Tuesday. If that one doesn't work, maybe I'll try tech support. Although, if the computer recognizes it only intermittently, I wouldn't trust it.
