I use a Magnavox ZV457MG9 combination machine - digital TV tuner, VHS recorder, DVD recorder and VHS to DVD dubbing. It has editing features as well. It cost about $159 at Radioshack - Walmart also sells them.

I thank all of you for the input. My brother purchased the Magnavox machine Saturday at Walmart, on sale, for about $128. We haven't finished reading the manual yet (a better manual than many I have seen) but it looks like it is what we needed.
Again, thanks for all the help.

I also have the Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder and have written over a 100 DVD's with it. Its been a good unit for the price. We also use it to record TV shows to DVD. Writeable DVD's are pretty cheap these days and they are pretty much a throwaway after we watch them. The unit has a commercial skip button that works pretty well to skip over the endless commercials.

Has anyone run into problems with copyright protection trying to copy an old VHS movie to DVD?

We have a digital video enhancer and duplicator called Sima GoDVD model CT-200. W spent about 100 bucks for it at Bestbuy 6 or 7 years ago. I think Amazon carries it also. I have copied lots of dog training VHS tapes and put them on DVD.

Most purchased movie VHS tapes have some kind of copy protection built in and you will not be able to burn them on to a standard DVD writer. There are some computer programs that will allow you to rip a copy that is protected but it is not legal. For what older movies on DVD's cost these days its not worth the hassel in my opinion.

It was not the mass reproduction of DVD's that I was looking for, but I wanted to edit them on my computer. Specifically cut and paste what I wanted to one DVD ect. Thanks

By mass production I meant commercially produced tapes. As I said they did put a variety of protections on them over the years. If you search on the internet you can find some software that can bypass the protection but you will need to be able to get the VHS connected to your computer. There are cards that will convert analog to digital but that adds another cost to the project.

I have a similar situation but I have beta tapes instead of VHS. Does anyone know where to get a beta player or a service that does this?

I have used Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3plus.Price $60.00 on-line. You will need a VHS player and a USB connection to your computer. Easy to use and you can edit.

You can get a Beta to VHS adapter. The Beta tape fits inside the VHS case.

Bangee, Is the DVD format a common used format like MVP or Windows Movie. Are there common software to edit the video? Thanks I think I can use this software program. David

It makes an MPG files from computer to VOB files on DVDs. You can capture straight to DVD or to your computer for editing.
