I would find one with an optical viewfinder because it is so difficult to shoot without on in the sun. Plus shooting holding it away from your face does not steady the camera as well as one with an optical finder.
As "veteran" photographer I agree. I'd like to buy a P & S for walkabout, but I want that optical viewfinder. Hard to find in a cheap camera.
This is the best P&S camera presently on the market, but it aint cheap. My wife loves it though and I've used it now a few times and thus far have found it to be an excellent camera. The addition of the popup EVF makes this camera tops for any P&S I've seen or tried. Thus far, I have only praise for this latest itertion of the RX-100.
I have had good luck with the Lumix Fz series. The older(about 2005) Fz20 sells for around $60 including shipping used on ebay. It has a 12x zoom, 5 Mega pixal senser, and hot shoe for add on flash. 5 mpx seem low these days, but it is usually good up to an 8 x 10. In about the same price range, the Fz 7 has 6 mpx, or the fz 8 has 7 mpx.
they are smaller and do not have a hot shoe. I also have
a Lumix DMC G, which has interchangable lenses, came with a great 3x zoom, larger moveable screen, down to around $200 on ebay. They all have an eyepiece mode. I even shoot an Fz 1 with only 2 mpx with good results. Canon,Sony, Samsung,Nikon, Fugi, all have good bridge cameras.

I'm a rookie "Picture taker", not a serious photographer.
I am looking for an "enthusiast" p/s camera that will take decent photos in low light (indoors, dusk) settings.
I have looked at the Nikon P7800, but am open to any suggestions, comments on other brands.
Most of my shots will be of family, weddings, beach scenes, and people. I would like some telephoto capability, (5-10x)
Thank you in advance for any and all advice.
do you want the best or the cheapest . or in between . give us a limit what you want to spend . other wise your going to get the crap along with more than you want to spend . if your not serious I would suggest $300 to $400 tops . if your going to live and breath cameras . then at least $700 and up ,
if you don't give two hoots about photography . and only want to record your
history , and to you a picture is a picture . and you have no idea what makes a good photo , then I wouldent spend more than $125 .
Thank you for that link....very nice camera
My wife has the P7800 and likes to shot the same wide range of sceens and modes you refere to and her Pictures can almost keep up with my Nikon D600.
