Wanted to start working with RAW so I set my Nikon D7000 to record RAW in Slot 1 and JPEG in Slot 2. Both came out JPEG. I thought the RAW would have a different file extension and also the files in the RAW slot opened no problem with Windows 7, just like regular JPEG files. So I figure the camera did not record RAW like it was supposed to. I updated the firmware several weeks ago but never used the RAW option before the update so I don't know if the problem preceded the update. Any advise would be appreciated.

Two possibilities:
1. You set the cards right, but did you set the QUAL setting to raw+jpeg?
2. The nef file includes an embedded jpg. I wonder if you are seeing that, instead of the actual raw data?

When viewing the files (not the pictures) did the file extensions include "nef" as extensions?

Windows 7 can not open RAW file. You can open it with software like Adobe Camera Raw converter or some other converters.

You're right. It was the QUALITY setting. Set that to RAW + JPEG (fine) and it works like it's supposed to. Thanks so much.

Windows will open raw files if the proper codecs are loaded.

If you really want you know what you have is:
1) Check the file type using details in MS explorer
2) Check the sizes, raw (NEF in your case are REALLY large compared to JPG files).

Other than that if you have identical files on both cards you did not set your camera properly.

Windows 7 WILL open RAW files -- I run Windows 7 on a desktop & 2 laptops and have never had a problem opening RAW files from both Olympus and Nikon cameras on any.
