I have a Nikon D7000, I have yet to learn anything about the histogram. I usually shoot in aperture priority or manual. Please advise a beginner on its purpose and how to use it. Thanks.

The histogram is a graph showing the distribution of light & dark throughout an image. From deep shadows on the left to just short of bright highlights on the right. If you see more peaks on the left then you should notice that your image is quite dark and alternately, more peaks on the right mean that the image is blown out and the highlights are too much. I use a histogram a lot in post processing. It shows the relative values of the highlights to deepest shadows and lets you accurately enhance either with a levels adjustment.

Look at the examples of a levels adjustment I made just an hour ago. Notice the difference in the final shot by sliding the highlight slider toward the left. It's easy to get exposure correct using a histogram.

I use the histogram alot when shooting outdoors and it's hard to see your picture because of the glare. I check the histogram to make sure I'm exposing it properly. It's a very helpful tool once you learn how to read it. Well worth the effort to understand it better.

Thank you. It's an amazing sculpture I saw in a museum park while visiting Charlotte, North Carolina. The entire thing is a mosaic, made with small pieces of colored glass. Even the teeth. It's actually large enough to walk into
through the open sides. I need to clean up the image, after I get PS going.

Well, I must say that tutorial on histograms was excellent. I'll start paying more attention to it when I shoot.
