Apple Dumps Aperture

Friday, Apple announced that they are not going to develop Aperture any further, except for compatibility issues which may surface during the next release of OS X. They are touting a new 'Photos' application to be included with Yosemite.

I have to say, despite all the positive spin that is being on it, I am upset about this change.

Actually, I predicted this and started using Lightroom a few months ago, since I grew impatient with Aperture's lack of lens correction and noise reduction tools.

But Apple could have said something before long - long before. It frustrates me that I have spent so much time editing in Aperture - and now I have two libraries; one for Aperture and another for Lightoom.

Adobe is apparently working on some way to facility the migration to Lightroom. I hope that their method for doing this will maintain all of my RAW files and the edits I have done in Aperture.

Apple can have 'Photos'. I am done - Lightroom from now on.

Check this post http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-222642-3.html it might help. I thought I read a post somewhere in the last day or two that had the link to the webinar that Racmanaz is refering to. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Still learning how to navigate this forum.

I'd love to know about the discussions that went on about that decision. It must have been a tough call, but apparently, they thought it was necessary. I wonder if Photos will have easy compatibility with Aperture.

You're not alone. Nikon did the same thing to its Capture NX2 program. Ironically, I stopped using Aperture years ago because I sensed Apple was not committed to developing itÂ…so I switched to NX2 only to have it dropped by Nikon. So now I'm viewing the online tutorials for Lightroom. Since Adobe's main business is developing this type of software, I feel there's a good chance they'll support Lightroom for years to come. Let's hope.

It is called "forced migration". It is all about money flowing from our accounts into corporate. Sales goes down because everyone that wants a particular product has it. Corporate comes up with new bells, whistles, products and tells consumer they really need this. Consumer spends money to get new bells and whistles. When sales go back down the cycle starts over again. When sales dwindle to nearly nothing corporate doesn't support the product anymore. Coming up with a new product will generate more money. Welcome to big business. Have a GREAT DAY!

I stopped using Aperture a few years ago when Apple stopped supporting iWeb. I think they shot themselves in the foot forcing a lot of us to go elsewhere. Anybody concerned that Adobe is taking over everything? Don't know their market share, but its got to be way high.

My concern is that this is another effort to push everyone to do everything on the cloud - like Adobe with the CC stuff. If "Photo" has Aperture's functionality, including letting me store images as referenced files on my own external hard drive, then for all intents and purposes it might not be all that big deal. But that's a big "if", I know.

What is the compatibility issue? Is it going to be OpenSource and multi-platform compatible such as LightZone did or something else?
