I am looking for a small(er) camera that I can drag around with me comfortably wherever I go. I have a couple of good DSLR's and a compliment of lenses, but I need something that is smaller and lighter that I can bring to weddings (as a guest), parties or just when I'm tooling around town. I am not looking to replace my DSLR's with this camera. I love using them and they will be my mainstays for my "serious" photography.
I was looking at the Canon G1X Mark II. I don't mind the price for the capabilities, and I love the features - except for one. I hate composing pictures on an LCD screen rather than a viewfinder. I know they make a viewfinder that mounts on the hot shoe and again, the price is not a deterrent. However, I am leery of having the viewfinder sticking up on top of the camera where it is vulnerable, and the camera won't fit most cases with the viewfinder in place.
Does anyone have any suggestions for another make/model camera of similar quality and capabilities - with a viewfinder?

The original Canon G1x is an awesome camera, with a traditional viewfinder. I love mine. The G cameras, like the G15 should not be overlooked either. I know the G10, that my Mom had, was unbeatable, and more compact than my G1x.

Take a look at the new SONY RX 100 III. It has a viewfinder, relatively large sensor for a P & S, and is very small.

I have a G12 that I like very much, until I started doing videos...make sure that you can zoom while you are doing a video. G12 can't, you have to stop, change the zoom and start your video again...not good.
My SX30 IS can and it does a great 720p video. Try to go to a shop where you can try the camera for at least 15 days and you can bring it back. I've done this with several cameras and has helped narrow things down. Haven't found what I want yet!

While I agree with the preference for a viewfinder, for the "convenience" camera, I was will to make an exception. Having image quality closer to the DSLR level was more important than the viewfinder, so I got the Sony RX-100 (original). It seems that the G1X Mark II is excellent, and I wouldn't let the lack of a viewfinder hold me back.
Can you tell us approx what size camera you want and what resolution you're looking for, and also how much zoom capability you'd like?
I have a Panasonic FZ 200 and love everything about it, especially its video capabilities, but if I were concerned about getting a fabulous still resolution and having a smaller size camera, then I think what amehta and rizer have said regarding the Sony RX 100/Sony RX 100 III makes a lot of sense.
Even though I almost NEVER venture into digital zoom territory-- the FZ 200 goes up to 24x optical-- here is what happened when I tried pushing it up to 96x recently. And the video quality was amazing! You would have a hard time believing that I was seated about 12 rows back from the stage and never moved up closer.

I bought the Canon G1X Mark II (what a mouthfull) the day it came out as needed 24mm and high quality. Was blown away by the pics. Use it professionally but also took it along on a road trip in the South West. Bright sun and no EVF were a major problem for me so bit the bullet and bought the $300 EVF on my return. I don't need the EVF for my pro work as the camera is fired remotely but for personal work and as a carry round it is hard to do anything outside without the EVF. Makes for an expensive camera but noise at 1600 ISO is hard to see. Makes for good backup with DSLR or will hold it's own if you don't need 24 MB images.
Should have added the EVF does come off (of course) and has its own little bag. I carry it in a small camera bag or in my pocket.

Panasonic FZ200. What a great camera. So happy I got one.

The VF is also retractable.
I have a Fuji HS50 which I bought for the light weight (compared to my Canon 40D and 100-400). it has a high resolution eye level finder and screen and a very good zoom.

For many of the same reasons you mentioned, I also picked-up an 'on the go' camera, (Canon's SX-50), and now my DSLR equipment is collecting dust. Check the '50' out... great, inexpensive camera with viewfinder, shoots raw and of course that terrific (50x) zoom! Want to buy some DSLR items? :) Oh, also shoots great HD video.
