Just my 2 cents. 1st, I wish I could achieve the level of "Pro Photographer" by simply whipping out my tripod. However, as many of you who know better will tell you, there is a bit more required, such as skill. I wish I had more of that!
I was born and raised in NY, and all these strange laws there make me happy to live in my little 'hick' town. I love it.
Anyway, a few places of interest that I don't think were previously mentioned are the ballparks, Yankee Stadium and Citifield. Also, it was suggested that you should consider using the subway to get around the city. I would suggest using some of the subway stations such as Grand Central for the photos.
I think the subways represent such an integral part of NY that they should not be overlooked.
I have no doubt you will have no trouble getting all the great photos you will need between all of the places suggested by others. Great ideas I will use myself for photos when I go up there this summer for a wedding.

Quickflash.....

I do plan on some Grand Central photo's. In fact, I recently took the Citifari 'Landmark' Tour and one stop was Grand Central. It was a great tour of several NYC landmarks (primarily buildings). Like you, I'm working hard to improve my skills. Purchased the DSLR only a few months ago...my learning curve is steep! I realize it will take time. Thanks.

and please keep the camera very close to you. I've heard alot about people pulling the cameras off the shoulders of people. keep a tight hold on your camera strap at all times.

Someone mentioned the tour buses...that could also be a boon because you'd be above the heads of the pedestrians and traffic and they don't move too fast.

WIFE AND I WENT TO NYC AND AT THE END OF WALL STREET IS PIER 17 . GOOD FOOD AND GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES AS WE ARE INSTANTLY INTERESED IN OLD SHIPS TUG BOATS AND WATER SCENES AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITYS THERE . PARKING IS A PAIN AND BY THE WAY THERE IS NO ESCAPING THE TRAFFIC IN NYC EVEN ON A WEEKEND AS THE PEOPLE THERE DO NOT HAVE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SO THEY WALK ON THE STREETS MAYBE JUST TO BREATH AIR BUT ITS NUTS .
GOOD LUCK ON YOU PHOTO JOURNEY . DUTCH

Interesting Dutch, as this was one location the future bride asked me to capture (lower Wall Street, Pier 17 area.) I will use the subway as much as possible for the reasons you point out. Thanks.

Good suggestion Elle. Also, the one spot she asked for a photo, a spot that is not located in Manhattan, is Grimaldi's Pizza in Brooklyn. I've been there after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The best pizza I've ever had!

What an interesting building. What is it used for? Apartments? Does it have a name
I was in NYC once to fly back to CA. It was dark with no time for sight seeing. Altho the Pilot did circle the Statue of Liberty. I am so grateful that I did get to see the Lady in all her finery. I would love it if any of you photographers would post some of your NYC photos.
My G'daughter went to NYC on 9/12 helping to feed the fire and policemen and women. Yes 9/12 is correct - day she went with some other college students. These kids didn't sit on their hands~

JacLee, it is an office building. I'm told the name is the IAC Building.

I will be in NYC for five days the end of the month and it had never occurred to me that NYC's finest may express concerns about a tripod. Now I'm educated on the topic. Thanks, all!

My pleasure. Here's a picture taken from the Staten Island Ferry as we were leaving Manhattan, perhaps the bride will want something like this as well. Also including a picture of the Flatiron Building. There are so many interesting subjects in NYC. St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller's Plaza, Trinity Church (Broadway and Wall Street), South Street Seaport to name just a few.

If you look at the map, the upper west side is only halfway up Manhattan, you have great photo ops going up on the #1, 2 or 3 IRT subway line toward the mostly forgotten-by-tourists upper Manhattan.

You may consider a third visit just for this area of our beloved city...Cheers, Ivan

Little Italy I'd shoot a scene on Mulberry Street taking in the many Italian Restaurants
The Financial District you have to shoot the Bull Sculpture at the south end of Broadway.
Lower East side you can shoot Delancy Street especially on a Sunday
Midtown - Gotta be the Empire State Building or Grand Central Station.
Upper West Side try the Museum of Natural History
Upper East Side - Central Park/Central Park Zoo

Meat Packing District - Highline Park (Park built on Elevated Railroad Tracks)
World Trade Center Memorial a must

IvanF....

As you point out, this area of the City often gets overlooked....and I am guilty of that as well. Morningside Heights, with the Cathedral would make a great photo Op, in fact my friend asked for a photo of the Inwood neighborhood. You have many great suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

If you go down to Battery Park City you can get nice pictures of the Statue of Liberty.
Downtown you have City Hall and the Court Buildings
You also have Times Square, Central Park and just plain old people watching/shooting

We can always go online and get any picture we desire, but it's not our picture. Isn't taking it ourself the joy of it all? 8-)
