WIFE AND I WENT TO NYC AND AT THE END OF WALL STREET IS PIER 17 . GOOD FOOD AND GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES AS WE ARE INSTANTLY INTERESED IN OLD SHIPS TUG BOATS AND WATER SCENES AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITYS THERE . PARKING IS A PAIN AND BY THE WAY THERE IS NO ESCAPING THE TRAFFIC IN NYC EVEN ON A WEEKEND AS THE PEOPLE THERE DO NOT HAVE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SO THEY WALK ON THE STREETS MAYBE JUST TO BREATH AIR BUT ITS NUTS .
GOOD LUCK ON YOU PHOTO JOURNEY . DUTCH

Everyone does not need a permit for a tripod. You are not considered a "pro" simply if you use a tripod.

This is the link from the Mayor's office.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/news/important_info_permits.shtml

This is a link further explaining the regulation.

If you go to the first link that Bmac has provided, it might bear noting that: 1) this summary reflects the final rule published on 6/11/10 (see"History"), 2) that the discussion was updated as recently as 11/1/11 (see the bolded paragraph under "When A Permit Is Required"), and 3) the webpage carries a 2012 copyright notice (bottom left). Conclusion: Barring additional pursuasive evidence to the contrary, this is current policy, at least as far as the Mayor's Office is concerned.

Re the substance of the policy: However inartfully expressed, it's clear that an individual, merely using a tripod in order to "film", does not require a permit under the MOFTB regulation to photograph in NYC unless the individual is asserting, or intends to assert, exclusive use of City property while using a tripod. This is expressed in several ways in the policy statement.

Other issue: What other NYC agencies, if any, might have jurisdiction over issuing permits that could be relevant to the use of a tripod for photographic purposes? If none, then no permit needed.

Note for the OP: You can apply for an optional permit at no cost to you. You could send them a list that includes all of the sites listed by others and as many dates as you might want to shoot. Might cover you if the gendarmes hassle you.

Thanks, Bmac, for the links.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Just my 2 cents. 1st, I wish I could achieve the level of "Pro Photographer" by simply whipping out my tripod. However, as many of you who know better will tell you, there is a bit more required, such as skill. I wish I had more of that!
I was born and raised in NY, and all these strange laws there make me happy to live in my little 'hick' town. I love it.
Anyway, a few places of interest that I don't think were previously mentioned are the ballparks, Yankee Stadium and Citifield. Also, it was suggested that you should consider using the subway to get around the city. I would suggest using some of the subway stations such as Grand Central for the photos.
I think the subways represent such an integral part of NY that they should not be overlooked.
I have no doubt you will have no trouble getting all the great photos you will need between all of the places suggested by others. Great ideas I will use myself for photos when I go up there this summer for a wedding.

FYI - don't use a tripod while out taking pictures in New York. NY has a strange rule about pro vs. hobby photographer and the requirements for permits. If you use a tripod you are considered a pro and you need to have a permit.

Crazy NY politics.

Washington, is the same way, but I think it has to do with safety. If everyone started putting up tripods, with the population density, you'd have a lot of tripping hazards.

You can take the double decker tour bus to most areas, on and off all day and night one fee. Don't forget the bridges, south street sea port, the parks, Elevated park on west side between 10th and 30th, china town[ day time ], the ferry, 42nd st., wall street from one end looking up the street, the churches , pop into hotels and check with consignore [ spell check please ] their suggestions for immediate area.
And yes you can use tripod . Don't forget to look up at buildings, amazing shots up there.
Okay, thats all i got, have a great time doing it, don't make it a job. Vinniepics

What great responses with excellent suggestions!

RMM and Jerryc41, I will make an inquiry with City Hall as suggested...good idea.

Many thanks usaellie, no knee's, Bob and Roger.....excellent suggestions as well. Asking the locals makes sense, didn't think of that. With the suggested stops I can spend time now taking the photo's instead of looking for the best locations. I particularly like the suggestions on the church's...hadn't thought of that option. I like it. I will give the growing list to the future bride and ask her to choose from the locations suggested.

As RMM points out, now I have my work cut out, but, it will be fun as well. Again, special thanks to everyone for the thoughts and ideas. It's appreciated. I will post later and let everyone know how I made out....and post a few pic's as well.

What an interesting building. What is it used for? Apartments? Does it have a name
I was in NYC once to fly back to CA. It was dark with no time for sight seeing. Altho the Pilot did circle the Statue of Liberty. I am so grateful that I did get to see the Lady in all her finery. I would love it if any of you photographers would post some of your NYC photos.
My G'daughter went to NYC on 9/12 helping to feed the fire and policemen and women. Yes 9/12 is correct - day she went with some other college students. These kids didn't sit on their hands~
