You open an "account" i.e. get an Adobe ID, register your credit card number with them, pay the first month's instalment and then download.

So your initial outlay is $10 + local taxes, the next payment is the same amount one month later.

Thanks. Apart from my dislike of all things Adobe, which I could get over, this is a rather low entry price point.

Which is why Adobe are attracting a new customer base. If they don't lose their customers by inept updates, they will profit by the mass market instead of specialists. Their overheads are down in several areas, cutting out retailers (resellers?), disc and packaging, transportation etc., but I am told their help lines are red hot.

I was always an Adobephobe due to the shockingly high price of PS (much too high for a hobbyist). Then I broke down and bought Lightroom 4......,,what a great product.
I kept looking at CC for Photographers trying to understand what the catch was. It sounded too good to be true.

About a month ago I signed up and.....as far as I can tell there is no catch.
For $10 a month I get the current versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. (I don't know what Bridge does for me and haven't tried it......Searcher???)

Just to stay current on Lightroom and Elements would cost more than CC for Photographers.

Now........what is a good way to get started with Photoshop? I've been able to figure some things out but I don't think the "fumble around until it works" approach is going to be the best way to learn this piece of SW.

Bridge does what the cataloging feature of Lightroom does but it does it in, what I think is, a far easier to understand format with less chance of messing up, putting things in catalogs you don't want them in, and accidentally deleting something through misunderstanding. No moving or saving of catalogs required, Bridge watches all hard drives and memory cards, and you just create folders and subfolders to put things in.

I don't have time or desire to read a bunch of tutorials to learn and memorize how to store stuff after 35 years of using PCs. To me that's like having to read a book before you put new groceries in your cupboards and pantry although you've already been doing so logically for 40 years.

Bridge, on the other hand, can be set in "Folder" mode to resemble Windows Explorer, although it's a massively powerful Windows Explorer on super steroids with all kinds of capabilities I don't need to use but they're readily available if I did. It has other modes as well if you like those better.

What I like about Photoshop CC is that I can stay within the Adobe software packages from the time I plug an SD card into my reader until the moment I upload JPGs to my employer at the end. Bridge sending my photo to ACR, then ACR sending it to Photoshop with plug-ins serves every purpose I need with the exception of going outside to Photomatix to bulk process 7-shot brackets into HDR/Fusion files. I could probably do that from inside the Adobe suite too but just don't.

The workflow is smooth and seamless and that makes me a happy camper for $9.99 a month.

Searcher, I am not currently a CC subscriber. I have a question for you. Can you choose to download Photoshop CC ONLY. I have no need for Lightroom. I use Bridge and ACDC Photo Manager and this works well for me.

Yes, downloading LR is not compulsory, but the price remains the same.

Creative Cloud allows the download of PS CC, Lightroom, and other programs. You do not have to download any program, even if it is available.

I have the OnOne, Nik and Topaz plugins and they all work fine with PS CC and Lightroom.

There are no longer any disc updates from PS cs5 to 6 or PS cs 6 minor updates. All cs6 updates are now downloads. Adobe had a window that allowed for updating 5 to 6 and that has expired. The only way to get to cs6 is to buy upgrades or full programs on the used market. I do not know if CC allows for upgrading from cs5 to cs6... but what is the point of that if CC is available.

Adobe also recently announced that the $9.99 price is permanent, so you can figure your budget from there and decide if it is cost effective for you.

Thanks Searcher for the OP that answers all those persistent misunderstandings.

I've used the trial, but that's run out. Only place I've found it for around $100 is on eBay. Not sure if I trust those. Amazon has it for no less than $120.

Been using a copy of PhotoDirector 3. Similar to LR, but not quite the same.

Well, I did say ~! :XD: Yeah, I gt it for $119 and change ($0.99 in change, to be exact!) I've been working so much of late all I've had the opportunity to do so far was to install it on my laptop... I think the story will find its way into my blog www.hochspeyer.wordpress.com

I was using Lightroom 5 before I got the Photoshop CC package. I just downloaded Lightroom with it to have a constantly updated backup to Photoshop CC in case something horrible happened to it and it wouldn't work in the middle of a work assignment. I could always go back to Lightroom to save myself. I also wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth and refuse to accept it.

I suppose it could be uninstalled after the installation if you wanted to. I'd ask Adobe first though. If they check your computer monthly to observe Lightroom usage and it's gone they may get hasty and cancel your subscription, although I'm not sure about the logic of why they would.

I don't think they actually run a check on your computer, that would be against laws in many countries. They actually send a message at random intervals asking you to sign in. As I agreed to the Adobe Feedback I guess they also capture the relevant file on THIS machine which contains the codes for the frequency of the modules I use.

I am always signed in, as their server well knows, so the practise of requesting a new sign in may just be Adobe establishing and maintaining a presence.

The real turn off for Adobe is if you change your credit card without telling them. I did this accidently which is how I know their procedures.

The only way Adobe could tell if you are using it is if you are online. The program resides on your computer's hard drive. I'm not advocating a cheat. I am trying to clear up where the program and your files reside. I downloaded PSCC 2014, LR5.5, Bridge and Illustrator 2014 day before yesterday. I have NIK, Topaz and Perfect Photo Suite 8 and they all worked great after updating these programs. There are people who, for whatever reasons, hate big companies and say anything they can to shoot them down. Adobe has always been the front runner and will probably continue to do so. They have made record profits with the advent of the Creative Cloud and they added 2.3 million users and expect to add another 1.0 million this year. I would say that their efforts have been very successful and many of us have benefited from it.

My card number on file at Adobe (which was actually a debit card) was fraudulently used in Europe around the end of last month and the card company halted the $900 transaction in Great Britain, called me, and then cancelled my card.

Between the cancellation and the delivery of my new card, of course, Adobe tried to get their $9.99 and stopped my service even before I got an email. So I had to go in and use my wife's debit card number to make the June payment. They're pretty johnny-on-the-spot about jumping right on something like that happening.

My phrase of "run a check on your computer" and your longer phrase of "they also capture a relevant file... which contains the codes for the frequency of the modules" would seem to say the same thing because they're capturing data from your computer no matter which way you say it.
