When I looked into it, it seemed that it has one significant advantage and one significant disadvantage. It can exactly reproduce the "camera jpg" from the raw file because it can read and apply the camera settings stored in the nef. But, as far as I can tell, it only opens nef raw files, not other brands. Since it wouldn't also work with the Sony arw from my RX-100, I decided to pass on it.

Capture NX2 was designed to work with Nikon files. I have opened JPEG files from other cameras but my recommendation would be to use it only for NEF files.
In my humble opinion Capture should be the primary editing program for NEF files since it can read the information encrypted and it was designed specifically by Nikon and Nik to edit the files.
I cannot speak on behalf of anybody else but in my hands it has been an outstanding software.

Does anyone have experience using this software. I'm interested in how it compares with Lightroom.

I only tried Lightroom briefly and hated the way it cataloged my photos. I use NX2 all the time now and love it.

If you're shooting with a Nikon, ViewNX2 will open your NEF (RAW) images and you can manipulate the RAW image and save a copy as a Tif or Jpg file. Lightroom is a much larger program but will accommodate most all RAW images plus more features than ViewNX2.
However, ViewNX2 is free and Lightroom isn't.

He's asking about Capture NX2 not View NX2.

I can't confirm that the information is correct, but I have been told my Nikon that they will patially support Nikon Capture NX2 by continuing to update the NEF Codex that will permit RAW conversions from newer model Nikons. I hope so, I find the advantages of Capture Nx2 to Aperture to be significant. I also have the NIK suite, CS5 and Photoshop Elements 11. Each has it's specific applications but I can PP 90% of my RAW photos in 5 to 10 minutes each with NX2.

Yes, that's what I also hear, but the problem will come when you upgrade your OS or have to replace your computer. Jason Odell, who has written the book on Capture NX2, highly recommends moving to Lightroom. I've now begun to process some NEF files with Lightroom and find the results very satisfying…but my entire workflow has to be changed and I'm still using NX2 until I can comfortably make the switch. Shame on Nikon for not supporting what they started. As a result, I'm now free to look at other camera brands such as Fuji…I'm no longer bound to NX2 to process my NEFs.
