Samsung Galaxy 5 Phone vs Nikon D40

Hello All,

I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy 5 Phone. I am still learning all the in's and out's of the camera on the phone. I am heading to LA next week and I always take my Nikon D40. It is just so heavy. I would like your opinion about using my Galaxy 5 phone camera vs Nikon D40. I like to take pictures that are professional looking and perhaps sell.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

Good luck with the selling part.

Don't use the phone. They can be nice to share, but I don't think you want to use it for selling your images. But it all depends on your customer base demands.

...generally agree. I do own an S4 and, if you're careful and adhere to simple photoshooting principles, the phonecam will do OK for you. It's slow, though, and very limited control-wise. That said, this one was done with an iphone a couple of years ago:

I have the S4 and suspect the S5 camera is not that different.

It works fairly well close up using the built in flash. Not so good in harsh light or distant scenes.

The D40 has respectable image quality even though it lacks the mega pixels of more current cameras. I suspect many saleable images were made with it in its day.

The ability to make saleable images depends more on your skill rather than the camera used, up to a point.

Why not take both, since you want a phone with you anyway and strive for making the best images your skill and opportunity will provide, and if they sell so much the better.

You have a lot of clicking time between now and next week. See how you like using it on a regular basis and compare images with the D40. I have the Galaxy 4S, and I don't consider it a camera, although I have taken a few random shots with it.

Occasionally I fall into that trap myself by passing a photo op thinking I wish I had my camera when the S4 is in my pocket.

Its a camera and a lot better than many of us were using years ago.

It may be that pixel v. pixel, the S5 wins with 16MP v the D40's 6MP, but because of the limited controls on the phone you may get a better image from the D40 on account of being able to choose a better aperture for the depth of field you want and thus yield a more pleasing photo. Simply a case of being in control of your camera.

You can take a great picture with basically any current camera, given good light and little motion. Better cameras improve your chances of taking the great picture with low light and fast motion.

With either of your cameras, taking a picture which will sell is entirely about the artistic quality, so I would concentrate on that.

The S5 has this new awesome technology called ISOCELL technology, If I had to make the choice between the two cameras you mentioned, I would probably take both since you are going to have the S5 anyway. Check out this videos from Samsung.

You want to take photos that are professional looking, and you think people will want to buy, and you are considering if your phone camera will be good enough for this?

Read my question again and tell me if anything about it sounds absurd.
If the penny doesn't drop, there is nothing anyone here can tell you that will help you out.
