Women may understand my comment here, which I make with love.

My wife loves bags. I mean she loves bags. She leans toward bags by a British company Mulberry. She has a collection of them as well as a couple Jimmy Choo's throw in. (Hey she lets me buy camera equipment)

With that rather high bar set.

She is tempted by the ONA bags even though she is not into photography.

Expensive and they dont look like they hold much.

It depends on the bag. Some of their bags a quaite large. However the OP said "I am fairly small so I dont want an overly large bag"

If you are near a Costco, mine has a Tamarac Jazz 83 (might be 85) that is fairly small-medium and says it's a tablet camera case. I did not look too close at it for all ammenities but it looked well made and spacious enough though. $50.

Looks like a nice bag.

I've got a Lowepro Pro Runner 300 and several other bags. Here's a link to it on B&H. The price is right now since they've reduced the price from $189 to $109.

It is - and US made (did I really say that ?) too !!

It's got an amazing amount of (internal moveable) space and, importantly for all but especially for a woman, is very light in weight when unloaded.

Easy to get your camera out of the top with lens attached, can be carried with either the top handle (if you're not going to walk too far) or in backpack style. Lots of protection - I like the strong pvc-like bottom which keeps out any wetness - and very easy to get into all necessary storage places.

Got mine as new and a "steal" (won't tell you how much) on eBay UK.

Lots of videos about it on YouTube for you to check it out.

This is so confusing! I really like the nice pretty girly looking bags...being thatI am more that type but I would like to be able to take off doing whatever, being hiking, or just walking and have a good, easily accessable bag...i think I am going to have to think about this some more!

Work out your personal priorities (how high up are you really going to put "girly-looking"?) in a bag, take a good look at your options against those priorities (including, but maybe not the most important, "price"), try to get a look at your short-list (take your gear with you), and your decision should be much easier to make !

With my wife I have found the "price" as a priority in choosing a bag ranks similarly to "comfort" as a priority in choosing a pair of high heels.

Beyond the understanding of a mere man.

The girly look of the bag isnt really that important...most likely wouldnt be all cutesy taking pics anyway..I do want want to keep price pretty low for now...i have a transit backpack (forgot the #), may just make do with it until I find the one that says "hey, I am the bag you want!" I dont know if I really like the backpacks though. I am more of a shoulder/messenger bag person but I am going to give this one a try..can always let the kids use it if I absolutely hate it...i appreciate all of your suggestions and I do look up the bags up mention..

Caveat, men have a tendency to be gun nuts too.

I'm a smart women... and a gun owner. Does that damage your preconceived notions?

I am trying to decide on a new camera bag...I am fairly small so I dont want an overly large bag but want to have a tablet or small laptop in bag also...will need large enough for my Nikon D3100, 11-55mm, 50mm,70-300mm, speedlight plus cards etc...I think I am wanting a shoulder bag, possibly Lowepro

I love my Case Logic SLRC-203 Large SLR Camera Bag (Black). It's big enough for my Nikon 5100 camera and a Nikkor 18-300mm lens plus an extra lens and places for everything. It's even got a waterproof bottom so you can set it down anywhere.
I will say that I don't carry a camera bag with me when I'm hiking or walking. It usually stays at home. I take a cloth, lightweight (Grocery type) bag with long straps and only carry what I need for the day... another lens, an extra battery, lens cleaners, circular polarizer, and my tripod, etc. I keep my camera on an OpTec sling, over my shoulder, all the time. It's handy, fast and comfortable.
A camera bag is more for storage and should be hidden in your car but it's a red light for folks who steal things. If I do, for some reason leave my camera in the car, it goes into a dry styrofoam chest in the back of my SUV were no one can see it.

What about those inserts that are advertised for about 30-40 I think. You can put camera equipment in it and move it from purse to messenger bag to...until you find what you really love.
