I had never heard of Raw until joining UHH. Always jpeg and satisfied with it. I received an Olympus EM-1 for Christmas and after reading about Raw on here I installed Lightroom 5 on my computer. Unhh! So much to learn --- both with the camera and the software. My question is this (I am sure there will be more): When I go to a picture on the computer that is jpeg I can see what it is before opening it. When I go to Raw it shows a picture of a camera so I have to open it to see what the picture is. Am I missing something or do all Raw files have to be opened on the computer before you can see what they are?

Off the subject I love your avatar. That's the first camera I had in the early 50's

Make sure you install the latest version of LR5, it should not be giving you that camera icon within Lightroom if you've got the latest version. But I think the EM1 was added sometime in late winter. I got my EM1 in January and had to wait a few weeks before Lightroom added an update to deal with the RAW's.

Post back and let us know what happens, there's a lot of Lightroom users and pretty many EM1 users on the forum so we'll help you sort it out.

Technically, RAW files are not viewable without a computer and software to tell the computer how to display that particular RAW file, so you are correct in your figuring. But Lightroom should know what to do with your RAWs without you having to do any more than you do to view a jpeg in Lightroom.

If you have Windows, you can get a free Codec pack from Microsoft that will enable you to view raw files in Explorer.

I'm not sure either of us answered what he/she wanted to know, maybe Searcher did though

Another hint, wvatxn, since you're just starting to dabble in raw: I shoot raw+jpg. That way, I can see more quickly if the image is "worth" going to the trouble of processing the raw file.

When you preview a raw file, please note that it is just an approximation - you must do the work to make it look like you want :)

 That is good advice.

Also, compairing RAWs to JPEGs will give you a feel for the differences and often the camera JPEGs are pretty good and you can use them to learn how to process the RAW.

That download is only any good for Windows 7.

The free program Picasa, from Google, opens most RAW files and certainly does open ORF files from Olympus cameras as I use it. It opens RAW & ORF files next to each other. But, if Picasa does not do the things you need consider taking more time creating you images it is a versatile, non-destructive program. I humbly suggest not wasting money on a “pro” program like photoshop unless you really need it.

I got several cameras from ebay, including that "Brick." I'm planning to turn them into lamps - someday. That was the largest-selling 35mm camera for years.

Thanks for the reminder, Searcher, I hadn't updated the codec since I got my E-M1. So I was given the choice of two files:
can't remember the complete names now, one contained the number x86, the other one 64. Picked the latter, and now the file icons are blue squares with the letters pse inside, instead of the pretty orange flowers.... OS = Win7.
So, I guess I'll try the other one, I can only make things worse, right?
