Where do you find these western movies?
Yeah I've got to say I like westerns too. My favorites are "The Shootist" with John Wayne (His best movie in my opinion) and "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood.

"Red River" is my favorite. Another Wayne flick

silverhawk, Thank you very much. I think kids now days need something like that to watch.
the later westerns maybe more realistic, and better acted, but they are not as much fun.
all of Louis L Amour books are still available but if you want to read another good series of westerns p/u the books by William W Johnstone.I think his books are every bit as good.

Thanks for the response and for the info.....Don't know if I've read any "Johnstone" books, but I've read hundreds of the "paperbacks" of Western novelists.....makes you feel as though you're living every minute of their exploits.....thanks again...I'll watch for his and give them a try.....h

Great list. My favorite is the realistic epic, Lonesome Dove which ran as a mini-series in 1989. Better that way, the movie would have made many compromises. Here's how Lonesome Dove came about:
"Originally written by Larry McMurtry in 1971 as a movie script. He intended John Wayne to play Woodrow Call, James Stewart to play Gus McCrae and Henry Fonda to play Jake Spoon, with Peter Bogdanovich directing. Wayne turned it down, and the project was shelved. Ten years later McMurtry bought the script back and wrote the book (on which the series was based)."
Available on DVD which runs 373 minutes. The Blu-ray disc has extra features with interviews, making of the epic, etc.
"Best western ever made." -Houston Chronicle
Howard Hawk's Red River,1948, with John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, Clift's first picture, was, I thought, one of the first great "realistic" westerns. Fully available on YOUTUBE.
