What all the pro's have said is basically correct. Now if you want an opinion from a dummy who has been shooting for 50 years--here go's
OLYMPUS. An SP820 UZ. It has a 40X zoom, a wide angle and a close up mode. I just recently bought mine for $299 (factory direct) as a refurbished (works great, looks great ). This is my second super Zoom from OLY. This is likely a discontinued model, but I feel sure they will have a comparable new model. Oly is noted for having outstanding glass. Only drawback I can see is that it still uses AAAbatteries--so always carry spares. ( maybe a new one will have rechargeables. Good luck on your new career.

Amazon has a Olympus SP-820UZ iHS Digital Camera (Black) for $196 new or $100 used...looks like a great camera but no viewfinder.

I do real Estate photography part time. First you need to know how to compose a photo. Most agents stand in a room and shoot at eye level and get flat photos. You need a tripod and remote release to take good low light photos in a house. A refurbished canon t2 or t3 camera will work but a wide angle lens 10-22 is over $500 but provides great coverage in a room.

Agreed - it's not so much what camera you have it's the lens. A quick search for real estate photography tips will point you towards ultra wide angle lenses.

I would definitely advise against any fixed lens “super-zoom” compact as you are stuck with one lens and your money is wasted on having 50 or 60 times zoom as you want to do mainly interiors and probably street shots of houses. The quality in compact is restricted by a smaller CCD/CMOS (the bit that does what film did). You probably will be unable attach a strong flash if it is needed for “fill-in” at later date as you advance your technique and seek to be more creative.
