Wanna upload my pics to some place, just in case

OK, so I want to put the pictures I have some place in the cloud. I want to keep them private, except for the ones I don't want to keep private. ;-). Basically, I want an offsite back up of everything. Yet I will want to showcase the ones I like. Any suggestions? O and it's gotta be free

Once it is free, it is not under your control, and you have no guarantee you'll get your images back. You get what you pay for.

If it's just the "keepers", you can get about 100GB of free space on DropBox, and Carbonite is another option. It might make sense to use two different sites for the two uses: the backup and the sharing. There are quite a few free sharing options like Picasa and Flickr.

Romanticf16 is on track... these suggestions apply to all cloud storage.

1) Read the contract top to bottom, front to back and find out who really owns your images. The ultimate "backup site" or "sharing site" means just that... sharing ownership of your images.

2) As a patron who has lost images (Well, I would have if I had not understood that you cannot pass the responsibility for your "backups" to a third party and be safe) with two different storage sites that both disappeared on me, I now suggest requesting the financial statement of the web site owner for scrutiny.

Have I ever gotten a positive response and a financial statement. NO. So much for my opinion of the "Cloud".

Offsite backup?

External hard drive x 2 , keep one somewhere else offsite, back up to them once a month.
Do not trust "the cloud" to care about your specific images.
Why would yours be more important to "the cloud" than the million other people they store stuff for.
"Oops" and beaureaucratic systems sounds like a recipe for grief.

@Lighthouse has it right - the cloud has its uses but backing up "everything" ain't one of them. Already you've seen comments about how you may lose control of your images, or lose them altogether. But the other aspect is sheer time - unless you have a very high speed connection or not many images to back up, it will take quite a while to load everything offsite.

Redundant local backups, rotated (use disk A on Monday, disk B Tuesday, then go back to A on Wednesday, or whatever interval you want to back up) and have one of the disks (or a third disk drive) stored offsite (in case the house burns down) are more in your control and don't rely on connections to the internet.

I want to reiterate my points about Cloud or Internet Storage (why can't we just say internet... is Cloud more exotic?).

I have nothing wrong with using the internet for storage as long as you don't:

1) mind sharing ownership, or agreeing to ownership, of your images with the Web Site you choose.

2) you don't ever need your files back in a hurry.

3) you know the name and contact information for the "owner" of the web site.

4) you anticipate a day in the future, beginning tomorrow when you attempt to contact the web site, and find it "not available Ever Again". As in disappeared.

Today's best (though not free) solution for your problem may be this:

Use an external drive for local backup (should do this anyway).

Find a willing friend/relative to let you put an NAS on his router, with you keeping the key to yourself.

This gives you a local backup, and a 'cloud' backup that only you have access to.
To showcase your best, use something like Flickr (free).

Of course, your friend/relative needs to be a trusted person to leave the NAS with, to keep it private.

1) Web sharing sites maybe, not storage sites.
2) Yep
3) With DrivePop the owner is available. It uses Livedrive. Easy to contact them (support).
4) You can substitute 'external hard drive' for 'web site' and still true.
