Canon 60 D Firmware... and

Does it make sense to update my 60 D Firmware from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1? I've never done it before and I don't want to mess up anything... I love my camera.

Question 2. (and please don't laugh)... But is it a disadvantage to being only 5 ft 1, and trying to shoot (hand held) shots... of people who are taller than me? Other than a ladder etc, does anyone have any practical ideas... perhaps various settings that might help. I'm always looking to learn more and improve. My equipment is a Canon 60 D, a Tamron 18-270 and just now getting a TamronSP 24-70mm F2.8 Di VC USD (w/image stabilization)...

I don't know anything about the Tamron 24 70 lens ,but I do have a Canon 24 70 and I love it on my 60D and never take it off.
as for being 5'1" can say I'm only 5' 6" and works ok for me.

Welcome to the Hog.

In response to your second question, my wife is 4'11½" tall and shoots everything hand held - and she is GOOD! Never uses a ladder or step stool. In crowds, she uses her compactness as a battering ram. She's not afraid to climb, but someone has to help her down. And you ought to hear her tell off the poor tall fool that steps in front of her!

I have this same camera and just looked at this firmware. Unless you have a need for either of the following then I wouldn't bother. Also if you decide to upgrade then it should be a simple process.

Firmware
Firmware Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

1. Fixes a phenomenon where the camera's serial number that is displayed in the shooting information of the image does not display the correct serial number. *1)
2. Corrects errors in the Greek, Italian, and Portuguese menu screens.

*1) If the camera's serial number is 2147483648 or higher and the camera firmware is Version 1.1.0 or
earlier, the images captured with the camera will be affected by the phenomenon listed in 1. above.
This phenomenon only affects the EOS 60D, and does not affect the EOS 60Da. Both of these cameras
are equipped with the same firmware.
To obtain the serial number correctly in the shooting information of images that are already captured
using the old firmware, we released updates for Digital Photo Professional and ZoomBrowser EX
/ImageBrowser applications. These updates can be downloaded from the EOS 60D page.

Updating the firmware will not "mess up anything."

I have updated camera firmware several times with no problems experienced.

You may or may not have to update the firmware depending on the changes included in the update. The update text will list the changes contained in the update. If these changes will not affect your camera use, then you could skip the update.

All the same, a firmware update may offer tiny, worthy changes not listed. I recommend updating the firmware.

Good luck.

Regarding your question #2, your height can have an advantage concerning composition. Many articles state you should shoot from angles out of the ordinary. Many shoot from the ground or low angle for a different perspective.

Hi Nancy -- I am 5'1" to 5'2" depending on shoes, etc. I never give height any thought. Wear stable shoes. Just shoot away and enjoy yourself. More important is your composition. Your photos will speak for themselves. No one looks at the shot and comments on photographer's height. Enjoy!

Nancy - I am 5' tall and use a Canon 60D also. Years ago I found it works well to have the tall people sit and the short ones stand behind them if it is a large crowd. And they love it! If necessary - I always try and put the people where they are most comfortable - be it on a horse or on the grass. Do what is comfortable for you and them. Their level (pet or children) always seem to be best at their level. And don't forget to enjoy what you are doing!
