Yes, the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 will work perfectly with the D5100. It will perform significantly better than the Nikon 55-200mm DX lenses.

If you were not planning on getting a D610 in the near future, and your total budget was about $2400, then I would say the D7100 + 70-200mm f/4 might make a better combo. But given your plans, getting the 70-200mm f/2.8 now does make sense.

Thanks amehta. I wish that I knew about UHH before I purchased my 5100. Not that I am complaining. I love my camera. But I would have been better informed before I bought and directed my money a little different. Wisely

P.S. BTW getting advice from MT Shooter and you is extremely inspiring. I read both of your comments that you give to others on this site over and over again. You and some others have helped me more than you could ever imagine.

It's tough when we find out what we could have done differently. But if we always made the right decision, life would be boring, wouldn't it. :-D

Thanks, I'm glad to help. :-)

Looking for some advice.... I own a Nikon D5100 and I plan on buying a D610, "or some full frame" next year. But I want new glass now. I like the 70-200 AF-S 2.8 Nikor. Am I crazy for investing in that expensive lens before I get a full frame camera? I just don't want to get DX lenses and have to start from scratch when I buy the camera for my vacation next year.
Oh.... I am assuming that the full frame lens will work on my cropped sensor camera????? Guess that I should have asked that first.

Buy it. I bought that lens last year through Amazon, and it is my main lens on my Nikon D3X. I haven't taken it off in months.

It's beautiful glass. The images are terrific, beautifully focussed, and with great bokeh.

You won't regret it.

All of my lenses are Canon L (FF) series and all of my bodies at the moment are AFS-C (crop).
As MT stated, it is the lenses that make the camera look good.

(I see a 5D mk iii in my future) :D

That is the correct lens. I looked at that link and it answered a lot. 42nd Street photo just put that lens on sale.I have never seen it less that $2396.00 and they list it for $2100. Makes me suspicious. I am now wondering if their lens is a grey market..... I will not buy Grey market.

Stay away from 42nd st. They are a bait and switch outfit. Just not worth the risk

Okay. I'm an inquiring mind ...

Do you really want a Zoom lens OR would one-or-two single focal length lenses (e.g., 100mm + 200mm) be better for the type of photography that you anticipate?

Would two-or-even-three separate lenses cost less than the one Zoom lens?

I'm just asking because it seems that EVERYONE (that's hyperbole, of course) seems compelled to lugging around a Zoom lens when I reckon they are more-often-than-not using the lens at its maximum focal length.

The absolute BEST way to improve your images is to improve your lens quality. Whether or not you ever jump up to a full frame body, the FX glass is always a good investment.
PS
Forget 42nd Street Camera, all they sell is grey market and counterfeit products.

When using an FX lens on a DX camera, if anything you may find that with the smaller sensor you are optimizing the 'sweet spot' of the lens and not using the outer edges and corners, typically the weakest areas. In the case of the 70-200 f2.8 VRII, this principle may apply but it's a pretty sharp lens across the board on either mount.

Just remember it will appear as a 105-300mm so for wide angle you will need to revert to your old lenses. Also if money is an issue the Tamarin 70-200mm f/2.8 gets excellent reviews for $900 less with a 6 year warrantee, if not, go for the Nikon it is the best.
