You are correct, me bad

If it was just about one stop or two, I wouldn't have responded. It's really about the image quality wide open and at the longest focal length.

Three suggestions, all about the same price, look for used models:

EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM (discontinued, look ebay or KEH)
EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

The low-light capabilities of your 70D coupled with IS will give an f/4 lens flexibility in many indoor situations with no flash.

Primes I'd look at the EF 50 f/1.8 and the EF 85 f/1.8

That is also my concern. My other camera has a constant 2.8 and it was hurting for light when I was in a dark mission setting.

A fast lens is needed, but you will not often shoot wide open at a wedding. It's a combination of ISO performance and fast glass that will get you there.

The Sigma 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 is the best bang for the $$. I use the Sigma in the Nikon mount and love it. Without being i the location where the wedding is, nobody but you can say if the glass is fast enough. But with my D800 I have shot acceptable shots at 6400 ISO and 2.8

If you think you need faster, you could go to primes and get two for the cost of a 2.8 zoom.

Shot the indoor part of a wedding with the 50 1.8. Very nice results. And let's not forget, pretty damn cheap.

I shot a wedding earlier this month. Even though you would like a 2.8 lens, you still want to shoot at f/8 or higher to get your DOF which required me to use flash.
I shot with a 50D and a 24-105 f/4, ISO 100 and 580ex set for ETTL.
My shots were so much better than someone shooting the same shots with a 70D and a 50mm 1.8.

A 70-200 f/2.8 would be ideal and a 24-70 f/2.8 would be good. Good luck.

Nothing keeping you from stopping down the 50 and mounting a flash.

There may very well be, the OP does not say. many Wedding venues especially a church do NOT allow flash inside.

I'm using a Canon 70D (cropped 1.6X) and need a faster indoor lens that I'll be using for weddings.

I'm thinking in the 85 - 150 mm range after the 1.6 multiplication. But I need a fast lens that will work in low light. 1.8 - 2.8 range, with stabilization.

I figure the 86-150 mm range will work well sitting on the front row area or off to the side a bit.

You who are in the know and are shooting in a similar setting please feel free to give me your feed back.

Thanks ahead of time

I am a Nikon person but all have equal lens's. i always have my 24-70 f2.8 on my camera. Sometimes i switch to the 70-200 f2.8. Always does a stand up job.

Right. Just responding to Big Bear and his suggestion of using a flash as opposed to the 50 1.8

I also had the older version of the Sigma 50-150 and it was a fantastic lens. I can't speak for the newer version however but if it is as good optically and now has IS I would think it would be a great lens. Maybe you could rent it and check it out for yourself. Good luck.
