My partner and I went from a P510 to a D7100 about 6 months ago we are having so much fun with it. I'm not sure about other brands but I have learned if you want really sharp photos invest in good glass. (lens) Have fun!!

Are you looking at Night View?

I don't have IR on mine? Night view?

I use it during the day and I like the results! Nice composition to the pix. It looks somewhat like an old black and white pix.

Night view is one other settings to play with. But, no it is not the night view. It is IR a very different feature. IR on a film was with a special film and a special way to focus too!

Purchased my D7100 last September. Also have the D70 and D200. I primarily use the 7100 for most of my photography today except for when shooting tennis or other action sports. This is due to the time delay with the shutter. Otherwise the 7100 meets all of my requirements.

The 7100's biggest downfall is slow processing multi pictures when you are shooting RAW. But when shooting JPG at a reduced quality it will take all you can give it.

There should be no time delay with the shutter. It's probably due to your settings.

Is the delay on the D7100 about a second or two? If so, check Custom Setting d10: Exposure Delay Mode.

There is also a selection, I can't tell you what the custom setting is, related to focus. You have three choices: 1, the shutter will release whenever the shutter button is pushed; 2, the shutter will release when focus is close to perfect; 3, the shutter will release only in perfect focus. If 2 or 3 are selected, you may get varying degrees of delay if you're not in focus when the shutter button is pushed.

Are you sure you mean time delay with the shutter? Could you be referring to the oft cited buffer limits?

I find if you mess with the shutter speed you can get the action shots that you want. Push the center button on AF M and then use the minor control on the right front and change the shutter speeds that way.

3D is good for action shots. But, I do find that the laser imaging system do tend to get confused on occasion when something or other moves anywhere around your main subject.

It kinda reminds me of the Sgt York AAA unit that the Army tried to perfect some years back. If the sensing system sensed something moving it shot it to death! Fans for latrines, a flock of birds innocently passing by, do you see the drill?

It's Custom Setting a1/a2 for AF-C/AF-S. The D7100 only has release or focus priority for both, for when the shutter release is pressed or when focus is locked. The D800 adds release+focus priority for AF-C.

It is a wonderful camera and is the top of the line of crop cameras. I bought it to re-learn photography, basically from scratch, and have gotten a bit over-whelmed by all the options the thing has.

I have two peeves;

1) The way the built-in flash works, or rather the way it insists on working if I want to put a non-Nikon flash on top. Would it have been so hard to be able to turn it off and have the hot shoe still work.

2) You can get 6-7 fps for the first second. After that, the best you can do is 2. That's if you shoot jpg only, use it's even smaller crop mode and use the fastest cards you can get. I use Sandisk 95 MB/s.

My three favorite things;

1) Movies are truly easy to do. Sound is exceptional, for what it is.

2) Any lens at all will work, even my old ones from the early 70's ( AIS ). Non-AI lenses will not mount because of the indexing ring.

3) High ISO. High ISO. High ISO.

Okay, a fourth thing...

High ISO!
It is a wonderful camera and is the top of the lin... (show quote)

Never had a problem with my flash Built in or add on

Photosmoke....If I'm correct, non-AI lenses can be adapted to fit. It could be a matter of just filing of a protrusion on the ring to allow it to be used on the newer cameras. You can verify this with MT Shooter.

If you remove the coupling on your older lens you can use them on your new D7100 or simply pop the flash and use them that way.

Also, you have to "register" them "IN" your camera to use them too! I have 6 very early vintage Nikon lens w/couplings on them, they work, but the coupling needs to go!
