To zoom you slide it front to back. There are several versions of this lens other versions have normal twist and turn zoom all are sharp regular twist zooms versions are more expensive, the most expensive I beleive is the version with the SWM in the lens. See http://bythom.com/nikon.htm

Just to help if I can. Yours is the original AF ED version of this lense made from 1986 to 1992, and has the "One-Touch" zoom and focus ring, you slide it out to zoom to wide and pull it in to zoom to long tele. It was superseded by the "D" version which has seperate twist rings for zoom and focus. This was superseded by the "G" version which adds the AF-S internal focus motor. Each incarnation got much faster on AF speeds but they all have exceptionally sharp glass.

go to keh.com. they have plenty of used nikon lenses, look both in digital and 35mm, have a free 6 month guarentee ship by fed ex, reasonable prices. don't be afraid to look at stuff rated bgn or ug. they might have minor cosmetic flaws but you cans save big dinero.

I have a D90 I shoot Basketball games at court side and I need something fast with diffrent range like 28-300mm 2.8
What I really want is that D600 that camera has an FX lenses that open up wide for light and are faster.

Good choice since you will need the extra fps for shooting sports.

I sold my Nikon 2-70, f2.8 and Nikon 70-200, f2.8. I still have a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 AT-X PRO DX autofocus lens for Nikon DX format DSLRs. I used it on my Nikon D7000. This wide angle lens is rated higher than Nikon 12-24, f2.8 by Ken Rockwell. The lens is in excellent condition and comes with endcaps and a lens hood. Price $375 + shipping.

There are two versions of the "slide" 80-200 AF lenses. The first version (88-92) and the 2nd was a "D" version (93-97) which came before the separate twist ring "D" version. I only chime in as I own this "D" slide version.

I may be interested in the 80-200 f2.8. Just need to see what you mean by "slide" zoom.

I just bought this lens...and it is fantastic....almost mint from KEH @ $460..in auto, slide the barrel back and forth to zoom. In manual, you slide the barrel back and forth to zoom, twist to focus. There is a focus limiting switch as well. Although I have not used the the two barrel lens, I have to think that using a single barrel would be faster to catch action, but I will reserve my final decision on this until I try the more recent lenses. In any case, a great lens by all accounts!
