I set an orchid out to snap a photo of it's blooms. I got more than I hoped for when a Luna moth came in to check it out.
Aren't they georgous! The orchids are also. I found a cacoon from one in my red maple tree, but have not seen one yet. Good shot!

Absolutely great shot. I have seen only one Luna but not with a camera. Really nice catch!
Thank you Roxiemarty, I hope it comes back when it hatches out. They are seldom seen these days.

Thanks, but I was actually the one with the camera. lol
:-D
Not too shabby. I love 2fers. We do not have Luna moths in California.
I think I have a couple of photos of the same moth species you took in your photo.
I feel my photos could be sharper and the wood-grained background conflicts with the moth's markings and coloration, but he was so cool to discover! He obviously was dying, because we discovered him during the day and he never attempted to fly away when I went up close to take these photos. By the way, his antennas were awesome!!
I took these with a Pentax camera.

Your two photos are of a Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antheraea_polyphemusThey sleep in the daytime, which why you could get close fpr photographs.
Here is a dorsal view of a sleeping Luna moth, and macro-photo of head with antennae.
So amazing how these two species can be similar in some ways and so different in others, awesome!!
These are beautiful pictures! Stunning clarity!!! :)
