What are some of the things you would do with this picture to make it better?

If you're talking about shooting, shoot this one in portrait mode and get closer. If you're talking about editing, crop in portrait mode. I'm assuming the boy is the subject, not the tree branches (as interesting as they are). By shooting as you did, you cut off his legs and made him less important.

I chose the wrong picture to get feedback on. Thanks RMM. Now with the correct picture can you give me some tips?

Clearly, you have a thing about this tree. Even so, you need to get closer and choose an angle that has less distracting background. Also, fool around with aperture, try to keep the tree in focus and get a blurrier background.

Yes I love the way this tree is shaped. I was concerned about the background being too busy.

Maybe take the picture from a different angle so you don't have the Red building. Also change your Depth of field so the back ground is a little blurry and it won't look so busy.

Welcome to the the Hog. You have two things you are trying to take a picture of here. Both just won't make it. The boys should have been taken in a lot closer so you can at least see there faces.

The red buildings just take away from the picture. The car and building on the other side of the tree don't help. Perhaps taking that picture from another direction to reduce the eye noise and allow you get the tree or the boys in a different angle. Another option would be to Photo Shop those items out of the photo. You could crop it off center leaving the tree and boys which would reduce the buildings while enlarging the boys in the tree.

First, I like the concept of your photo. with that said, your looking for a little help. 1) your shot should be vertical to get more of that great tree with the boys, their vertical so that's the shot you want. Try more in camera editing before you hit the shutter to get less of unwanted backgrounds.2) remember to use the rule thirds on your subject, personally
I like the right side. 3) learn to use the camera settings to your advantage.

Regarding a re-do: with vertical (portrait mode) shot, try sitting on the ground, and take when sky is blue.

If you are going to crop this one, be sure it is level (straightened). If you are just starting out with post-processing, try the free Picasa by Google. It has very easy to use crop and straighten tools. Here is the download:
