My pics go on computer hardrive, dvd, and an external hardrive. Then I format in computer. I use a differant set of cards for each camera, so if I were to get the wrong card in the wrong camera the numbering system could get messed up. My first dslr was a canon 20d in 2004. After using the usb cord for a while I started using a card reader. Unless something changes, I don't ever intend to use a cord again. Format that card in the computer, it will not hurt. I also reformat in camera (when I remember) before using the card. Keep it clean and it will keep you happy.

I format every time after the images have been transferred. It's especially important to format if that card was used in a different camera.

I do not reformat. I fill the card and save it as a backup to my computer and external hard drive. The cost of an SD cardwith hundreds of photos on it, is about the price of one roll of developed prints. Anyone know of a reason not to save the cards? I do delete the images that I dont like and keep shooting till the card is full of stuff I do like.

You are wrong. the cost of the SD card may be the price of the cost of a develped roll of film, but, the cost of all the hundreds of priceless pictures on that SD card can never be replaced. If it is lost, then it(with pictures) won't be replacable. If it hadn't been backed up to computer, then would be all gone. After I download my pictures. I reformat the SD card in the camera.

No issue either way...format..reformat...don't...once a week, once a month....it's no biggie.

Exactly. Cards are cheap enough. I label the full cards with specific events after downloading, and just pop in a new card. 8-)

Okay. I'm convinced. I'll reformat but I don't think I need to every week? Thanks for all the info, help and ideas. Greatly appreciated!

Judy,
I am a working pro, I always reformat my cards after they are downloaded and backed up. I can not afford to have something go wrong with a photo these people pay me for quality and that is what they get. Formating a card takes just a minute and allows the whole card to be used. Oh I have 2-2g cards, 8-4g cards, 2 16g cards in my case. I probably have another 20 2 and 4g cards in my office. I format every card to the camera I put it in.

I don't delete pix from my card! Well, except for obvious 'boo-boos.' I consider my card to be my 'negatives' - to be kept safely & permently. . . especially with the prices of cards the way they are now.

I delete every time after making sure I've uploading all successfully to my computer. I don't think using photo cards as a backup is a real good idea. My boyfriend had a PNY card disintegrate in him camera so they're no infallible. We will never buy PNY again. He had his receipt and they wouldn't even replace the card. Plus, he had to pay over $200 to get his camera fixed. I use DVDs and portable hard drives as backups. I like starting every shoot with a fresh, reformatted 4 or 8G card with other cards in my bag also reformatted and ready to shoot.

Esp if you do any deleting of bad shots as you shoot having other images on the card can be a royal pain because your camera will fill in the gaps and your images will not be in the order shot until you upload them. At least Lightroom re-orders them. Not sure about other programs. They might remain out of order in other programs. Just a pain for me.

As most everything it's a personal choice but you asked for input. (-:

San disc says that you should never use an SD to back up your pics. Two people in this thread say they use the card for back up and one said that is his negitives.

WRONG - the SD has a charge and if that charge goes so do the pics. SD sells a back up card and say never trust the cameras card as a backup source.

......reformat my card? And how often? I've only done it a couple of times. And never seen to have a problem. Some people I know never do. But someone said I have to reformat. So just wondering. Is it really important?

You need to format the card(s) before first use. After I download the pics to my computer I reformat to clear the card. It's best to format/reformat in the camera using the camera. Memory cards are normally trouble free, but there can be the occasional bad egg.

If you download your pictures to your computer and back them up, isn't that safer and more perminate than a memory card?

Aside from maybe losing a few shots that you forgot to download before re-formatting, you certainly can't do any harm. That, and the fact that it only takes a couple of seconds to do it, makes reformatting a no brainer.

What you should NEVER do is erase or reformat in your computer. ALWAYS do these operations in your camera.

You don't need to delete the photos and reformat. When you reformat it automatically deletes all the photos. That's why it's so important to make sure all the shots have been successfully transferred to the computer FIRST.

I was getting somewhat worried....I hadn't seen anyone post that they delete their cards by reformatting, which is what I do. I never delete them, I just download them and then put the card back in the camera and delete.

I actually probably shouldn't take the card in and out of the camera to download like I do, but I do anyway. I have lost photos because of that before because of static.

Does anyone else actually put the card in their computer or hook by camera via UBS?

I have a card reader on my main computer that I use for downloading and a USB portable card reader for my laptop that I use when traveling. If you use the camera by USB cable to download into your computer MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A FULL BATTERY otherwise you could lose pictures
