I bought an Olympus Stylus SH-50 a few months ago and love it. 16mp, 24x zoom and loads of features. At $259 through E-Bay, maybe a bit more than you want to pay, but an excellent little camera.

I bought a Lumix LX5 and a Canon S95 at the same time. An obvious redundancy, so I had the S95 converted to infrared, which I can carry along with my SLR. Then I sort of gave my LX5 to my sister-in-law, complete with a nice little viewfinder. So, when Adorama came out with the S100 refurbs for a couple of hundred, I bought one. Of the two cameras (the S95 and LX5), I liked the LX5 a little better, mainly because it doesn't have as long a shutter lag, plus the zoom extends farther. The S100 does have a long shutter lag writing RAW images, so it's not such a hot street machine, but it takes beautiful photos and is very reasonable at $200. Mine arrived brand-new, so it may be a new over-stock camera selling as a refurb. Also, it has a built-in thumb rest, which saved me from buying and installing one as with the S95.

My beloved canon s90 fell prey to the "lens problem. Restart camera"
Fate. I am now looking for a replacement and have been going back and forth between getting the more affordable canon s110 or the higher rated much more expensive ones available. I also have a 30d slr but the pocket camera is my everyday choice- thanks for your suggestions! Judy

If you are willing to pay , the Sony RX-100 or RX-100 II are marvelous pocket cameras, they have much larger than average sensors, good low light performance and offer RAW plus full manual control if desired. They are small enough to fit in most pockets and I've made excellent 16 x 20" prints from mine. No point and shoot pocket cameras I've tried can match the image quality of the Sony's

There are many good suggestions here, Judy. Someone mentioned the Sony RX100 or RXm100ll, which are excellent -- but costly -- choices, somewhere around $550 and $700 new.

I own a couple of Olympus SZ-31mr's, and I love them. The 24x zoom does surprisingly well, even fully extended at its 600mm equivalent. The image quality of the 16MP sensor and Oly processor is as good as it gets in a true pocket camera. Seriously, try one if you can before looking at anything else. I submit that you will compare any other pocket camera to this one.

Indoor image quality, especially dynamic range, is astounding. And, of course, it has all the bells & whistles like touch screen, all sorts of shooting modes, smile detection, and the works. Video shoots with superb stabilization, and even shoots HD slow motion or allows you to take a full res still image while shooting video. Missed the shot while shooting video? No problem, just extract a snapshot from the video, in camera!

All of this and it will fit in your shirt pocket. Note, however, that it does not shoot RAW and there are no manual aperture or shutter controls. Still, I keep one in my camera bag with my DSLR at all times.

I have a favorite seamstress who works wonders with pockets. I take all my shirts to her when I buy them.

Ie.

My Canon D5 with the 28-135 lens is technically a shirt pocket camera.....

But with unmodified shirts, the best bang for the buck is the Canon s100, or a well found s110 IME.

The best backup small camera is the Canon G11 or G12 It has a viewfinder and a variangle view The picture quality is great under all conditions. I had to go to refurbished for the G12 Afer I gave away the G11. For some reason they stopped producing the variangle viewfinder which I find very useful

Judy still has not said what the purpose or use of her pictures is. Yet, all sorts of cameras are being recommended.
