Failure to compete and a tendency to be esoteric is part of what drove the small shops outta business. If you ever visit the B&H store in NYC you will understand what it takes to make it in America. Lottsa products, and very knowledgeable people willing to tell & show you everything.
In brief, it's greed by the consumer for the best price and the best product - you and me, and failure to deal with it by the seller.
Big fish eat little fish.

We are very lucky here in New York we have B&H Photo. There are others that are good But B&H is the best.
Steve,
Thanks for the compliment. From our perspective it is B&H who is fortunate and most grateful to have you and so many other Hoggers as our customers.

We have three very good stores within a 30 minute drive. They are excellent and have patience with the novice and expertise for the pro. Closest is Fort Worth Camera with 2 locations, one in Grapevine-Colleyville and the original in Fort Worth which I use. They have Edgar, a friend, who helps me a lot with whatever I ask. The other is Arlington Camera and has Beverly. Each is unique and both are personable. I use either. Both gladly help, offer a variety of classes and have great inventories. Neither are pushy. I will say that one has Emma, a beautiful greyhound, that is always there to quietly welcome you.

Central PA has Carlisle Camera. They moved from downtown Carlisle to somewhere near Harrisburg. Not a lot of used equipment but some anyway.
Way to far from me....Rich

Kansas City- Crick Camera, Overland Photo.... In St Louis I visit Schiller's.
We used to have others but they went away. I even miss IPAS, the eclectic one one in the Crossroads district. Do a lot of on-line business now for work.
In my area, it's Southerland's Photo. They've been in business for about 50 years and are great people.
We used to have a couple of Wolf's Camera stores, but they've closed up shop. When they were here, I still preferred Southerland's.
