I am a novice and just got the D3200. I got a good deal on a bundle and I find it very easy to use.

From which store? There are quite a few which one should stay away from.

Closeout digital. Researched and they had a 90+ rating from customers. I will, of course, pay by credit card so I'm protected in case something should happen.

D3200. Thinking of getting my daughter this camera. I'm Nikon dumb, so anyone that has one or knows about it...I welcome your thoughts on a 'starter' camera. She takes great photos with her iPhone, but she needs a DSLR to enter the real photography world. Many thanks. BTW..it refurbished (which doesn't bother me) and is selling for $369 with an 18-55mm VR lens and Lightroom 5.

I have one and like it a lot. Can recommend it, the price is also good for the kit and Lightroom 5.

Good luck with them. Most everything they sell is grey market or import at the super low prices. Scambook does not rate them too highly. Your call completely, but we just want you to be happy with your purchase.
Make sure it includes the battery, charger, body cap, strap and of course a USA warranty.

Just for others who may be reading this thread, you can buy a NEW Sony A3000 for $350 with 18-55 lens most everywhere with great in camera HDR and sweep panoramas - just sayin .....

I have had the 3200 now for about a year and taken thousands of photos and love the camera. This is my 5th Nikon and have had no problem what so ever, good luck.

Thank you so much for the warning. Will write it all down and make sure to ask them all the questions. Much obliged.

It covers the hole where the lens goes if you're going to leave the lens off for any length of time, to keep out dust etc.

Please listen to the good folks here and don't go cheap with grey market. Remember the old saying about being too good to be true. Check out B&H, Adorama or Cameta.

If I ask the questions and get the right answers and use a credit card for protection, does it matter if it comes from the grey market? I don't have money to throw around being on SS, but certainly don't want her first camera to be defective. My plan was to have it shipped to me so I could use my little bit of knowledge to make sure that it's OK. And it does come with a 1 year warranty. I certainly understand using B&H or any of the good companies, but I get the idea that many think I might be making a mistake using a wholesaler that is licensed to sell to the public. I have faith in the experience of people on UHH, so I'm thinking of asking the questions suggested, but to let them sink in and check out the major retailers before making a decision. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions given so far, and am open to listening to any new ones. Right now, I'm very happy that I found UHH. Still open for ideas and/or suggestions folks. Many thanks to all.

He has a very good camera store in Austin. Precision Camera on Anderson Lane. It's not as big as B&H but they do a booming business, they are easy to work with and they stand behind their word. I like B&H a lot and I go to their store when I'm in NY and I have purchased online from them. I'm grateful to have a "real" camera store in Austin and I try to support them so they will be here in the future.

I can't think of a better starter camera. I had used Canons for years with good results and just wanted to try a Nikon, so I got the D3200 and was amazed with what 24 megapixels can do with a good state of the art camera and a good lens. Even some of the flagship cameras costing thousands do not equal that.

The biggest problem with gray market cameras is that Nikon will never service it, even if you pay for the repairs.

A big problem with some of the "discount" stores is that they do a bait-and-switch, or sell a camera without components you assume would be included, like a battery or lens caps.

My heartfelt thanks go out to all the responders of my original posting asking about the Nikon. I wanted all of you to know that I ended up buying her the D3100 package. The package is a 32 Gb SD card, extra battery, cleaning stuff....the normal. Wanted to get her the D3200, but it was stretching my money too thin to be comfortable. I got it at B&H. I've used them before, and everyone on UHH seems to mention them often. So now I have the happiest daughter in CA. Thanks again guys and gals for all your support in my quest. You all helped me make what I consider the best thing to do considering the money situation and the trust level of the seller. Y'all are awesome.
