Dear NealB,
You are in good company and you seem to understand both NGAS and yourself. Now all you need to think about is how to enjoy the "learning curve." My first advice is to be gentle with yourself: your very first photos will probably not be your best. Nonetheless, enjoy the process and cut yourself some slack. Second, don't try to learn too much from the manual that came with the camera; you can find many UHH posts in which many of us write about how poorly they are written and edited. Spend a little more money and buy a guide to the use of your camera from your favorite bookseller. I like Magic Lantern; other UHHers will offer other recommendations. And, finally, remember the old rule: the best way to be thought a great photographer is to take lots of photos and only show a few.

Hi Neal, do you mind telling us what the 5 lenses are, - just in case we can save you from a zealous salesman trying to lift his quota.
5 sounds like a lot to buy straight up and I would like to know if he sold you a sensible kit.

At least your reading the manual. That's a start. Download the PDF file from the Nikon web site so that when you need to find something out specifically you can do a search. Searching for a word brings up information fast so that you can find it quick without thumbing through the manual a hundred times.

I joined last summer just to pick up tips on scanning my grandfathers old slides. I have since been watching the forums and trying to decide if I really want to buy a camera. Well I decided last weekend to physically check out the camera I had been researching for 9 months. Well my over thinking things and impulsiveness due to having ADHD kicked in after going to several several stores and no alcohol was involved. First I decided to only spend a few hundred on a entry level DSLR so it would not be a long learning curve. Two hours later I walked out of the store with a Nikon D7100, 5 lens, and assorted other shiny objects and $4,000.00 lighter in the wallet. My last camera is a 15 year old point and shoot Canon so after reading the manual on the new camera I think i am about to drown. This is going to be a long and painful learning curve for a 63 year old man. At the very least it will be interesting. Be prepared for a major on-slot questions coming from me.

Hi. I recommend that you invest in the book:

David Busch's Nikon D7100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography.

His guide for the Nikon D7000 is a constant guide for me, organizing the pertinent info given in the Nikon User's Guide. The newly organized information is in a form, that when used with the Nikon Guide, provides a rich path to becoming at least competent and perhaps even fluent. These camera are as complex as the newest personal computers so be prepared to have fun while learning! Good luck and keep at it!

You probably suffer from LBA too. I know I do. Hey, that rhymes.

You are going to have a blast with your purchase. There are a few hard fast rules that should not be broken, but are broken all the time. The key is to shoot a lot and experiment. That way you will be able to see what you like. Enjoy and Happy Shooting.

WOW! Now all you need to do is learn how to use it all. Did you select the lenses yourself or were they suggested by the salesman? You have an ultra wide angle zoom, a standard to medium telephoto zoom, a telephoto zoom and two extremely useful fast primes lens. You are pretty well covered from end to end. Where did you buy it? I hope it was an authorized dealership.

With that equipment, you are cooking. I got the 50 mm 1.8 a few weeks ago and have been shooting aperture priority ever since. It causes you to walk back and forth rather than standing still and zooming. And the 14-24 is one of the best Nikon has ever produced

Neal, there are a lot of us early Seniors in the same boat. We have the time and resources(most of the time) to embark in a new venture. I like you sense of choice in your camera. Which additional lenses did you purchase?
