Tamron, Sigma, Tokina ALL make good macros and if do not mind manual focusing ( which is actually better - the closer you want to focus ) you can pick up used ones on e-Bay for $200 + or - .

Hi, Tamron's 60mm is a great buy right now from Adorama or B&H (check them both). It is a good price with a $100.00 rebate which is within your current range. It is a great lens and an excellent buy. Check it out. Keep shootin' Mike

Depending on what your subject will be ( bugs, miniature toys ...etc ) you might want to check out extension tubes ( kenko, Vivitar ) as well as close up lenses ( the ones with 2 elements ).

For less than $100 you will be able to amaze yourself with real sharp macro pics.
