I love taking pictures! I have an old camera. Its a Minolta DiMage Z1. It no longer zooms in or out. I am looking for a new one, but have severe financial problems. Looking forward to learning new things here.

Welcome aboard. When you try to use the zoom feature exactly what happens?

Have you checked any pawn shops? Sometimes you can get great camera deals there.

When trying to zoom is there any type of grinding noise? Or any noise at all?

Can you zoom it manually? If so, that is all you need.

No, haven't tried to do it manually. How would I go about doing that?

You grab the lens ring and pull on it, it should move, then just adjust it where you want it. And you have to move every time you want to make a shot that you want, that is
manual zoom.

I checked into that model. There basically is no way to manually zoom it. The zoom is strictly motorized from what I can tell. It could be something as simple as the zoom switch contacts. No way to know without some disassembly. A switch will start out being erratic at first. Next step would be the motor that drives the zoom. At that point it's probably a lost cause since I'm sure repair parts are no longer available. I would suggest using it as-is and saving for a newer model. It's amazing what less than $400 will buy these days. The Canon SX50 for example. And the MP rate is tremendously increased. If I'm looking up the right model you have a camera with 3.3 MP. Most cell phones are way above that. Like I said, I would use it as-is and go out and take pictures. A zoom is not a "have to have". You might get more creative living without it for now.
