Think outside the box... just get a right angle viewfinder eye piece. Frankly, you'll have an easier time of looking through in many situations.

With all the advantages of being tall, You'll find little sympathy from the vertically challenged. LOL

I've got an old DR-3 plus an even older "F" right angle finder & a Spiratone branded one as well...Don't use any of them...

I am 6' tall and purchased the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 on ebay. They are out there, you just have to look. I can stand flat footed and if I just extend the legs only, without the center column extended, with my camera, battery grip and quick release plate, it is at the top of my head. I have cranked the center column up just to see how sturdy it was and this tripod is rock solid. I think I paid $90 plus shipping. My son is almost 6'4" and he can look into the viewfinder without the tripod center column being fully extended. Oh, and these tripods are way underrated with regards to what they hold. Hope this helps!

I'm 6'1" and still use the large Bogen/Manfrotto 3035 that I purchased in the early eighties for a Mamiya RB67 PRO-S medium format camera.

When this topic come up I decided to see what the measurements were for this tripod. I had never thought about this because the tripod has handled all my needs. At it's lowest point the head is 23". At it's highest point, where I would feel secure mounting a camera on it, the head is 71". With the column raised the head is at 80". The tripod weighs ten pounds. Some of you may remember when Lester Bogen advertised his tripods this way.

Yes, you are right. And the altitudinally challenged have a claim against all the cabinet and closet space they have to pay for but cannot access.

And little-bitty voices that go beep, beep, beep.
Don't want no short people around me"

Bird photogs know all about these - if you do want to lay in the mud, you will definitely want to use one of these !

I am 6' also and solved my "short" tripod problem with this $50 pistol grip ball head that raised my camera about 6".

Thank God for those articulating screens some cameras have, but that would be too much of an expense to trade your camera in just so you can use it on a shorter tripod :)

I have noticed that the average tripod is about 60 inches fully extended. I assume thats with the center post all the way up soas to make the tripod unsteady. Since the average height is about 5' 10' or about 70" tall the average guy has to kneel to see through the viewfinder. I know that I am unusually tall at 6' 5'' plus but that means I would have to stand in a 2 foot hole to use the standard tripod. Tall tripods are much more expensive. I think I am being discriminated against because of my height. Does that mean I have a claim of tallism. No need to respond I am just venting.. I feel much better now.

boberic, after all the jokes and nonsence about tripods I want to tell you what I have been using since 1947 that I paid $27.00 for and still use today . Its a Quick-Set Junior Model E-12 Elevator, no frills tripod that extends to 71 inches when cranked up to the camera mounting plate. You will need a stool at the top range. The center post can be removed and inverted for low angle shots. It held my Speed Graphic, Single Lens 2 1/4" reflex and many more including my new Canon6D with no problem. It weighs 4.5 lbs. I might add that it's a 3 section anodized aluminum tripod

Unfortunatly you can only buy it used on Bbay on bid or outright for 20 bucks, can't beat that. Wouldn't hurt to look it up.

I am 6'1" and have a Gitzo carbon fiber Series 3 tripod legs only that was too short for me some times too. Especially if I was trying to shoot birds in flight. Luckily Gitzo is an excellent product and they offer add on accessories eg an adjustable center column. It only added .9 pounds to the whole thing and now I'm very happy with my Gitzo. Yes, some tripods are their best with the center post all the way down and wobbly when they are up. But the Gitzo is a very well built product that doesn't have that problem.

The average tripod is meant for easy packing for travel, either in a suitcase or to meet the size requirements of carry on. Taller tripods are available if you are willing to pay the price and ship them as luggage when you travel.
