Another interesting fact: Kestrels can hover in place while looking for prey. Interesting to see, if you get the chance.

Wow, I didn't know that. Will have to keep an eye out for more of these birds.

As others have said, it's an American Kestrel, formerly know as a Sparrow Hawk.

As an aside, i caught two of these beautiful birds that had somehow gotten into my HS Study Hall. We released them after the Biology teacher examined them.

nice shots. the kestrels near me seem to be so nervous. constantly twitching their tails and taking off before you can get anywhere near them. i watched one jump off of a light post on route 95 in providence, rhode island last year. it killed a starling in the median. i watched in amazement as it rolled up the starling like one would roll a cigar. then it took off carrying it head first, for better aerodynamics.

Thanks gwr, its a shame you didn't have your camera with you when the Kestrel caught the starling. These little guys are very quick.

Oh he is just beautiful! My fav bird of prey. :D I just took one the other day & it didn't turn out as good as I hoped for. Their colors are so gorgeous! Good job :)

Thank you, I have never seen one of these before, I am so glad I had my camera with me. They are so pretty.
