Have a Nikon d5200. Want to get a Macro lens or Macro adapter lens. Any suggestions?

Start with the 85mm G version...you'll love it.

I use a 40mm because it was cheap. Sometimes I cast shadows on what I'm trying to shoot, but then I just back up a bit. Don't worry about auto focus, your DOF is so shallow, I usually take a group of focus shots and pick the one I like when I see them on a big screen.

I have a Sigma 105 that I use with my D7100. Works great and allows you to be a few inches father away from you subject.

I have the Nikkor 105mm Macro VR. It's a fine lens.

However, if I was to buy today, I would seriously consider the new Siggy 105. It has 3 " AF focus limiters" which I would find helpful. Although, I use MF most of the time, I find myself gravitating toward AF as my eyes are not getting better.

I have a sixty mm and I don't recommend it. I use it for copy work. The working distance is too short. Often I can't light my subject because of that.

My favourite and most effective macro is the 105 mm f2.8 VR. It's relatively light, focuses quickly and often saves me having to use a tripod. It's working distance is reasonable. It's razor sharp.

When I need a longer working distance I use my 200mm F4 macro but ... that one uses the focus motor in the camera and it is slow, and it has no VR which can be a problem sometimes. Additionally I don't think your body has a focus motor so that lens would not focus for you.

My recommendation is to go for the 105mm VR f2.8.

However, if you're on a tight budget and you will never go to an FX sensor, the 85 mm DX lens is an excellent lens. It's cheaper, smaller and lighter but still has a good working distance and is razor sharp. It just won't work well on an FX sensor if you ever go there.

If you want something longer, there is the Sigma 180mm macro which does have VR and a built in focus motor, it would work with your camera body.

The Nikon 105mm is superior to the Sigma 105mm I have both. The Nikon focuses faster and has less noise (sound noise), The Sigma noise is due to their image stabilization which floats loose in the lens.

I have one of the older models of the 105mm. It's a great lens, sharp and quick auto focus. However, I can be assured of no camera blur due to hand holding at speeds of 1/125 and above, so if hand holding is a problem, I would go with the newer one that has VR.

They are all grest lenses. The answer depends upon what you want to shoot. The smaller focal length lenses are lighter and therefore easier to handle but one needs to get closer to achieve 1:1 mag. This may be a challenge if you want to take pix of the little insects.
