Has anyone ever heard of or dealt with a place out of Austraila called Techrific.com? They have a nikon d5200 with a Tamaron 18-270 lense for $959. Is this a good deal? Also would the Tamaron 18- 270 be a good lense to just keep on the camera for an all around lense , instead of buyin g a kit with the 18-55, and 55-200. Thanks you for any advice!

Have the Tamron 18-270 and it is on my camera 90% of the time. Happy with it so far.

My main concern would be their warranty program. I would also like to hear from some people who have had direct experience with them. Good luck.

They say it has a one year warranty . They will send a courrier to your house at no cost to you to and from them for returns.

I don't know about Australia but in the USA that would be a "gray market" deal. I suggest you visit an established photography store and see what they say about warranties.

Hi,
I bought the following items from Techrific :-

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Sigma 15mm F2.8 EX DG F/2.8 Diagonal Fisheye
Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash

Paid the money directly into their Bank Acc. Great service, they answered all my questions promptly, were courteous and dispatched the items the day after they received the funds. The above items were all bought at different times.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi,

There price was the same as advertised, after I had put my order in I saw one of the items cheaper, I emailed them and they price matched it, (they will only price match with another Australian site). I corresponded with them through email before and after I placed the order and had no problem. They Banked with ANZ, I took the money to an ANZ branch and directly deposited it.

Hi,

What country are you in? ANZ is a large Bank in Australia. If you are overseas then you could most probably do a deposit through your Bank. I don't know how the warranty would work in another country, how much you would pay for shipping and if you would have to pay import duty or any other taxes your country might have. Email them with your questions, I had no problem with them.

It sounds like a good deal and the lens is the kind of thing you'd likely leave on the camera most of the time. I have two problems however.

First of all the warranty question. Even if they really will send you a courier (and I'm sceptical about that when you look at the distances involved), you're likely looking at weeks before you'd get the camera back. And if it comes back late who are you going to complain to? It's not like you can go stomping into their shop.

The other issue is local repairs. I had an argument with Nikon about that very thing a few years back. They state that they will only repair whatever you bought in the country you live in. I live in Canada so according to them if I happen to buy any Nikon product in another country, they will not repair it or honour the warranty here even if it's a legitimate Nikon product. I suggested that was rather unprofessional and not at all helpful to me since I do a lot of photography overseas. I asked what I was supposed to do if something breaks down during a trip. They weren't helpful, basically if it breaks down and it was bought in Canada, I have to return it to Canada for repairs. If I buy a replacement in another country I'd have to return to that country if the replacement breaks down.

Now when it comes to warranty, that Aussie place likely will honour the warranty but what are you going to do if it breaks down after the warranty period? If my understanding of Nikon policy is correct you'd have to ship it back to Australia again for repairs. That could get a bit pricey.

On the other hand, I have four Nikon bodies and eight lenses and these things span as much as ten years of rugged use. Nothing has ever needed repair from Nikon. The only thing I had to have fixed was a Sigma Ring Flash which failed after a couple of years. So maybe you won't need to worry about warranty or repairs.

It might be a good deal.

It sounds like a good deal and the lens is the kin... (show quote)

Hi,

I agree with you. I don't think they will courier it from another country, their warranty will most probably be invalid. one option would be to buy a Mack Worldwide Warranty, I did this for my partners camera as he spends most of his time in the UK and traveling in other countries.
