I have been to anchorage a nome and had the privilege of meeting Susan Butcher,who won this prestigious race 4 times.Your shots are great,both human and canine.You must read Gary Davidson's,Winterdance.A truly amazing,laugh out loud autobiography of his experience of racing in the Iditarod.

love your shots, I have lived in Minnesota all my life except when I was in the Air Force. my home town has had dog slide races and i have never seen one.

Oh wow, that's quite an honor. I've never been to Nome. Too cool. Thanks for the book recommendation...I'm going to check it out!

Ok, so I looked it up, and it seems the author of "Winterdance" is Gary Paulsen. My two older boys grew up loving several of his other books, but I was unaware of this one. I am so glad that you mentioned this...I'm going to get it for me, and my younger son as well. Thanks again!

Very good shots, AKblestmom! I love the piercing blue eyes on some of the dogs! Were they wearing boots like I saw in someone else's photos?

Oops...yep, they are wearing boots! :) Do they keep them on for the whole race? I suppose they do. I'd love to see the race!

They keep them on most of the race. Mushers go through thousands of booties a year. They change them quite often during the race. They especially help the dog's paws from getting scraped up on the ice.
During the ceremonial start, it's customary to hear young kids who line the chute when the mushers come by yell "Booties! Booties!" and the mushers will toss one their way for a souvenir.
