What is the manufacturing difference (Quality) of gray vs white equipment?

Here's a good explanation from CanonPriceWatch.

I don't think there's a difference in quality. You want to avoid gray market items because you won't have a US warranty and the instruction manual might not be in English.

No "manufacturing difference" at all, they all come off the same production lines. Difference is the importer and warranty servicer.

True, but sometimes there are some relatively minor differences in the specs. For example, a Sony US market model may have GPS, whereas the same body shipped to another market does not.

The 'grey' market does not use different models or different quality to the normal distribution channels; all the equipment sold is exactly the same. The issue is one of the sales channels used; some countries have very low import duties and sales taxes for example and can offer items at considerably less cost than the home channel provided the duties etc don't have to be paid.

Perhaps the question that should really be of concern is how do I get that duty free item I bought in Hong Kong at two thirds the local price into a valid warranty program.

Warranty is an element of product cost. Consequently the higher cost results in a higher price. As an example when you purchase a hard drive the drive is exactly the same with a one year or five year warranty... Only the price changes.

No difference. The problem with GM comes when you need service. Most GM sellers offer their own warranty, but when that runs out, you are screwed if you need Nikon service.

I am new to this forum. Something being overlooked in this discussion is the video output. Units designed for non US use use the PAL standard for video output while the US uses NTSC. Bottom line you can not show PAL video on a US TV. I ran into this when I was buying my Sony A77, The people at the shop did not understand the issue until I explained it to them. Sony has a different code on the label for non US goods, i.e. 50i, the US has 60i. US TVs sync video at 60 hertz, PAL at 50 hertz. I hope this helps.

has more to do with warranty than specs. For example if you purchased a grey market Nikon, from outside the USA, you would have to ship it back to the purchaser for warranty and or service.

I am able to choose on my Canon Camera which standard I want to use.. NTSC or PAL to do video.
