As in Canon Rebel XSi EOS 450D ?
If so, you do have that option.
See page 158 of the camera's manual.

Actually, I happened to see mwsilvers reply. It's changed. Will give it a good try tomorrow since it's supposed to be in the low 80's. Thanks for the info...both of you.

Look at page 158 in your manual. It isn't as clear as a Nikon menu, but I think it allows a form of AF-ON. Of course I don't have this camera. I shoot Nikon.

I have been on UHH for quite a while, lots of people seem to use back button focus, is there really an advantage to this, I have never used it. I can focus by holding the shutter button 1/2 way, wait for lock, then recompose the shot. I don't see the advantage of BBF.

I just recently set up my D300 and D7100 for back focusing, for the first time. This weekend, I was in Las Vegas and decided to take a trip into the desert and really use the back focusing for the first time, at length. The D300 was a dream to use that way. The D7100 was a bit more difficult to use, because the programmable button is a bit closer to the middle of the camera body, and makes it a bit more cumbersome. When I made the change, I figured if I did not like the way it worked out, I could always program it back the other way. But the ease of using both cameras in a fast paced environment means that I truly will never go back.

For this feature you have to have a lens that allows full time manual focus capability. It is not possible with most lenses and you can damage a lens that does not have that capability if you try to manual focus it when it is switched to AF mode. Don't do it!!!

Excellent point. I once ruined AF on a Canon kit lens that way.

I use BBF as an AF confirm technique while using MF on long lenses. Eliminates AF hunting. While holding down the button and turning the lens focus ring you will get an AF confirm light in the viewfinder.
