Happened upon LearnMyShot site on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89gdrdGUkSQ ) Splash Photography Techniques and thought I would try my hand. Basically, I'm happy but there are a few problems to overcome next time, such as different lighting, little more DOF, and a steadier stand for the glass which seemed to vibrate.

First shot shows the setup. Nikon D5100, 50mm 1.8 lens, lighting from window camera right & modelling lamp from behind (as daylight faded, only the lamp was used). Shutter set to continuous. All processed in Picasa with extra tinting on second splash image. Exposures as noted.

I like to use an off camera flash, high speed sync. You can keep the ISO setting low while using high shutter speeds.

I did some water drop photography a while ago and discovered that using an off camera speed light BOUNCED is the best way to freeze water. Remember....the less power you set your speed light to, the faster the flash. Thus capturing a frozen image is easier.

Thanks for you suggestions, OC & Paul, glad you stopped in for a look. Will have to try flash next time but it seems like the timing would have to be perfect. BTW, nice water drop shot, Paul...and the images on your flickr site are fantastic. :)

Tonemapped this single image in Photomatix Pro...like the grain and how the colors came alive.
