If the fog is in the distance then you can get some interesting results. But when you're in the fog then that's what you get - photos look like you're taking a picture of a cloud.

A thought in my head from when I was shooting film. To enhance fog in a picture you get a blue filter. Is my mind going or does that work. Would it work with digital photos also?

Get some close up foreground interest that will come out sharp and contrasty, trees look great like that , then they fade of to soft grey the further away they are

That's the point. Shoot in B&W with a blue filter for fog enhancement.

Watch your auto-focus it may have problems finding a distant subject with any contrast; manual focus may be a better option. This photo was taken last Saturday under such conditions.

Here's a shot I took years ago. I'll have to look for an opportunity to re-shoot it when the Half Moon comes back to dock this Spring.

Check the link below. I went out that day with some pretty heavy fog. Started out by adjusting WB in ACR then played with things from there. You can do some very interesting things with fog. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

A couple of mine, as well. Sometimes, finding an effect in pp can make for an interesting shot. Otherwise, as already shown and mentioned, if you have a closer object that can be seen more clearly, it adds interest.

I like shooting in fog, but have to be careful because Photo Shop Elements likes to "correct" my exposure--which was fine to begin with!!
I went to the park to photograph the willow in the fog, the skating pond was an unanticipated bonus, the ducks and geese wouldn't move.
Cropped to 8x10 in post processing removing a light poll and another tree that added nothing to the composition.

I find that every fog has its own characteristics. There is no other weather element that will get me out of bed as early as fog, and I'll usually stick with it till it's gone. There are endless ways to make it work for photos, but it does fool all the gadgets on your camera - white balance, autofocus, everything - so be prepared to over-ride your camera's preferred settings, and over-ride again when you get to processing. Fog sometimes looks like noise in the photo but noise removal programs may make your shot better or worse, so use it in manual as well. And take a lens cloth, some fog is so wet you'll think you've been in the rain.
