I do like the first image. The second image is a little too intense for my taste; the highly compressed tonality diminishes a sens of depth within the composition, essentially flattening the image.

HDR doesn't have to mean over processed but in the end it is what makes you happy.

Looks like the original captured the entire dynamic range so I would question the use of HDR. I agree with the others that #2 is too over processed.

Maybe something in between. With wide dynamic range in this shot a very light Tone mapping may be all you would like.

I like that much better. For my HDR, I simply used Scott Kelby's presets.

Yes, I much prefer this one. I like a photo which doesn't scream "Look at me, I'm HDR!". A lot of people take the process way too far - at least for my taste.
