He is a hero.

Yup. So says your government, which you love and trust implicitly. Of course, they also said they were absolutely, positively, we're insulted you'd even ask, not, I repeat NOT, spying on Americans.

Oops.

Should be hung for treason. Feel free to flee the country if you can't handle what the Gov't does to remain strong. As much as I hate this administration, this spying and what have you has been going on forever.
Should you decide to leave.... Take Hagel with you.

Since when does a high school drop out have the right or intelligence to determine or disclose what should or shouldn't be released from NSA files to the public or the press? "Whistle blowers" typically go to the Justice department and not to foreign blog sites. I would even be more understanding if he gave this information to the New York Times or another reputable news agency.
I would say that the State Department should revoke his US citizenship.

New York times reputable? HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I can guarantee you that he had to have signed a non-disclosure agreement. In revealing what he has, he can and should be jailed for it.

We have a thing on the telly at the moment asking if Edward Snowdon is a hero or a traitor. I don't claim to know all the facts, but from what I can make out, he never agreed not to discuss what he was being asked to do. He saw something that he thought was wrong. He never gave away any details. He just said "this is what's happening in your name". I don't think that makes him a hero but I certainly don't think it makes him a traitor.

So... in your America, one who discovers wrongdoing by the government should remain silent, letting the criminals who have taken over the reigns of the country continue their crime spree?

Wow. Somehow I think every single hero this country ever produced would disagree with you.

Simple fact - he revealed material that was classified Secret. It really does not matter what that material was. As I was told when I spent my time in the military, It does not matter what the secret is, even if it's the brand of toilet paper the president uses, classified is classified. If you allow Edward Snowden to violate this law without consequence, it will lead to more of the same. Next time the consequences might be greater.

Based on your thumbs, you should move to Russia and join him. I am sure that you will regret but most likely will be reluctant or afraid to admit because of reprisal that are quite common in Russia.

I thought that was the role of the press, which is why the Founding Fathers created the freedom of the press clause in the First Amendment. Unfortunately, the press has morphed from a fact finding institution, to a liberal mouth piece espousing nothing but left wing propaganda. The editorial page is no longer distinguishable from the main story.

That said, Snowden signed on agreeing to abide by the rules of the agency.

I'm not saying that. But he had time to think of a better way to go about it.
Such as a domestic news agency. Keeping the information hidden with of course someone else knowing where that info was. Then exclosure of it could be bargained with. But giving all that information to basically THE WORLD is not the way to go about it. Sorry I think he may have had good intentions but went about it the wrong way.

Excellent reply. As you state in our America it looks like you are from another country that criticizes hiding behind a computer or a US born that deserves to have been born in Russia or another enemy country. You should move to Russia to discover "reality" on how people that are just perceived being a traitor disappears and nobody will know what even happened to you since they are used to living under fear and repression since they are born. I see that you don't even dare show where you are. Why are you hiding? At least show a state or a country where you are unfortunately being part of. This is just for you

I think the answer is quite simple. He's a traitor. I can't help but think that it wasn't just coincidence that he ended up in Russia to seek asylum. Was he actually working for the Russians? I don't know but I do suspect so.
He endangered true patriots and agents who are out there protecting us every day. Did any of those agents end up dead? Maybe. We'll never know.
Hopefully Snowden will end up in a super max prison to ponder what he did.

We are mostly in agreement, he is a traitor. So, what does that make Chaney and bush when they outed CIA agent Valerie Plame? We dont even know the terrible consequences to their self serving actions. Where was the ralley cry to punish them for a acting like traitors?

Oh...another so called liberal bringing back the past administration. It sounds like the Obama rhetoric that we had to put up with for three years until he ran out of excuses. Welcome..."liberal" and practice the First amendment.

For those of you whose main complaint is that Mr. Snowden did not go to the American Press with his revelation about the government's criminal behavior, he did. He went first to the Washington Post. They declined to print anything about his story. So he went to a documentary filmmaker, an American employed by the New York Times, and to the American lawyer-journalist Glenn Greenwald.
