Hello all! My wife and I are in the market for a DSLR camera, but neither one of us has any experience or knowledge (or equipment!). I've been researching all corners of the internet, and the more I read, the more confused I get! I've been enjoying reading your posts over the past couple of months, so I knew this was the place to go for help.
First: our goal. We want to get great pictures of our kids (7, 5, and due in August) - and some seashore shots for kicks. There will be stills, and there will be action shots (all manner of sports).
Second: my research. Through my research, it seems that the market is 50/50 on Canon/Nikon. It seems the best camera for us (based on quality and price) is the Nikon d3200. I'm good with that (unless you feel strongly otherwise). I'm hoping to get everything we need for $700 or less. And "everything" seems to be (1) camera (2) 18-55mm VR (3) zoom lens??? (4) UV filter (5) memory card (6) bag (7) tripod (8) top mount flash???
The confusion comes with the lenses. All cameras seem to come with an 18-55mm lens. But we feel it will be important to have the ability to zoom to the kids from afar. So I've read up on Nikon's 55-200 VR, 55-300 VR, and 70-300 VR And I've noticed some others such as Sigma. They all have pros and cons - and I've gotten to the point that I don't know what to do! I could really use your expert advice on finding an appropriate zoom lens.
Sorry for the long post, but I figured the background would help. Thank you in advance for all of your wonderful guidance.
PS My wife and I will take some classes once we get going. I'd love to post some pictures on here when the time comes to see what your opinions will be!
Hello all! My wife and I are in the market for a ... (show quote)

Seems like you know pretty much what you want. I have several cameras, one of them is Nikon D3200. I can confirm that it is a very good camera for the money paid. You should just buy it as you are planing. The only advice I have for you is about the lens. Rather than buying 2 lenses, the 18-55 kit lens plus a 55-200 for example, you should just buy one lens with the camera body, f.x. the 18-140 lens or 18-200 lens. Then you have the range you need and do not have to carry 2 lenses or take the lens off your body, risking dust to overtake your sensor.

I have noticed that there is not much availability of this kind of kit, maybe if you look for D5200 with the 18-140 or 18-200 lens you will get better results. Also you could look for refurb gear at reputable dealers to get this combination.

This here is what you need, but I know nothing about this seller, if he is trustworthy or not.

The best way to learn how to use your new gear is to use it. If you have the time (ha ha) find a photo club near you. All (or at least most)of us with a camera love to share what we know with other like minded people. And don't forget about youtube there is a lot of very useful information on there. Welcome here.

In glad you brought up the sigma. It sounds like you recommend the lens as a good one. I haven't heard much about it, except for some comments that it is an "off brand". I'm not sure if these comments are negative or simply factual? And just for clarification, is Sigma's OS the same as Nikon's VR? I'm pretty sure it is, but then again, never shall a novice assume. Thanks!

And yes, the OS on Sigma is the same as VR on Nikon.I'm a Canon shooter and I have three Sigma lenses. The 18-250, 24-70, and 10-20mm.All very good lenses and much cheaper than the Canon lenses. Good luck. Ray.

Oops, quote reply. My faux pas. Thanks for the tip! And that's good to hear about the sigma lenses. Seems like a no brainer for someone like me!

With Sigma, OS=VR, DC=DX, DG=FX, and EX is it's "pro-sumer" level lenses for current lenses.
