. . . now all I need is something interesting to take pictures of.

I bought a Weifeng WF-3716. I believe it is German manufactured. It is light and very strong. It doesn't over-power the SX50. They look and work great together. It has a waterproof pouch, a leveling bubble, a hook on the bottom for additional weight, a doohickey that screws into the bottom of the camera and stays on so it attaches and detaches from the tripod in a flash, it cranks up to 68", it has snap locks on the legs, it has a barrel type twist lock on the shaft that locks the legs out to prevent collapsing, and another twist lock on the riser column to lock it in place, a long panning handle that I am particularly happy with, its horizontal to vertical flip is a perfect 90 degrees, it has a handle, and it pans flat and smooth, and it cost about $100.

My bag is a Nova 160 AW Lowepro. It has its own raincoat that has a special up-side-down velcro pocket from which it is quickly applied to the whole case. The strap is wide and comfortable and long enough to go over my head and still hang low enough to sling it around. It is small and light weight but very strong. It was designed in Petaluma, California, and manufactured in China along with all our TV's, computers, toaster ovens, and everything else. It has loads of pouches and a handle on top. In short, it's everything I need and it cost about $100. I got two extra batteries, and the 8gig memory card that the SX50 came with to backup the 64gig memory card that I bought.

I've never felt so prepared for anything.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I looked for every feature you suggested.
Best always,
Moshe

Sounds good. If only you had something to photograph! :D

Think twice about extending that center column, since you get less stability.

That seems to be my problem here in Michigan. I know there are things around my area to photograph but I'm so used to seeing them, that everything is too ordinary. Perhaps the same in your area. I think we just need to look a lot harder. But right now, all I'm seeing is snow.

Perhaps we should switch areas.

You're right but to come up to my eye I'd only need to extend it about 2-3".

How long have you lived in the Catskills?

Nothing wrong with ordinary. Snow all over here also. Here is an ordinary tree that I see from my front door every day.

That would probably be interesting. Personally, I like the views in the western part of the US. Arizona, Utah, and California stand out in particular for me.

That's one beautiful tree, even bare. Send us another one with the new baby leaves of spring. I'll be looking forward to it.

Congrats on all your prep, and I think you got a good mate to your camera with the tripod.

It has been so friggin cold this winter I have not wanted to go out and shoot much. Tennessee usually has very mild winters, not this year (damn global warming) everything is brown outside, 1st time in 24 years I've lived here that the grass has all died and turned brown. We usually have some early wild flowers this time of year, but not this year. Very depressing.

Thanks Raydance: It would be great if a glorious spring also brought a glorious comeback for the economy. But I'm a realist and I hope that our green photos are not the only green we get to see down the road. Yes, the remarkable change in the weather is depressing but also worrying.
I hope we get another chance to do it right.
Be well,
Moshe

Last year a friend told me to get out into the snow and photograph something. so I took a macro lens and got the coolest picture of a snowflake.

Been in Texas for 27 years now and brown grass is the norm in winter. Originally from Michigan and don't remember it being ordinary with four beautiful seasons but don't miss the cold. Stopped and took pictures (ordinary) of trees at the local community college parking lot awhile ago. Liked this one particularly.
