[quote=Steven Hayre]I shoot with a F:2 90mm Leica summicron lens that I have had since 1972 and found it is the best investment I ever made in camera equipment.

I have that 90 also. Only M not R. I use to have both systems, now I have only the M8 rangefinder. If I had a full size sensor, I would probably go with the 90.

I'm with the 28-300 crowd, great all around lens for full frame cameras.

For me, I'd only choose a lens with vibration reduction as most of my shots are hand held and VR really helps at longer focal lengths. My friend has a beautiful Zeiss 200mm lens but no VR. On a tripod its fantastic, but, hand held, my Nikon 28-300 VR consistently delivers sharper results with shutter speeds below 1/1000.

A light weight f/2.8 10-400 mm.

Best answer so far. An impossible question and an imaginary lens.

When I shot Nikon, I used the 18-200mm as my everyday lens. It was versatile and it produced great images at any length.

I use my 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR II probably 90% but occasionally need f1.8 of my prime 35mm.

No question....a 50mm prime f1.8 or, better, an f1.4. That would be for a full frame. for a DX (cropped sensor) same in a 35mm.

depends

One of my cameras wears a 70-200, never comes off

One of my cameras wears a 100-400, never comes off

One wears either a 10-22 or an 18-200

My other camera wears a 100 2.8 macro. never comes off

I find that "zooms ww/Macro" aren't.
I find there is no one lens that does all deeds.

Perhaps when the technology exists we can all buy 8mm to 600mm f/4 lenses.

Like anything compromise makes the world go round.

When I find another body on sale I just might go buy that 24-70 lens and round out the glass arsenal
depends br br One of my cameras wears a 70-200, n... (show quote)

Joe....you have too many cameras. Or too much money. Or you use a bunch of old bodies. How come you don't just buy one or two great bodies and change the lenses? That's one of the outstanding features of a DSLR.

I usually have my 17-135 for most shots but recently purchased a second body so I can keep my 150-500 on full time also. Even with two cameras I still change lenses a lot depending on what I am shooting at the time!

From all of my lenses, and I have quite a few, I'd go with my Tamron 18-270. That lens takes beautiful pictures and covers a wide variety of distances. It is ultrasharp, lightweight and one of my favorite features is that once you have taken your photo, you can zoom back to the 18mm end and there is a lock so the lens isn't "drifting" when not in use. I hope this helps. Here are two photos from a trip in October to the Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia, NJ.

I never shot a General before, but I guess that would be a portrait photo, so the 85 1.4.

Agree---had it since it hit the market and got new model when they upgraded. Takes sharp photos but lacks some in low light which my D7000 makes up for most of the time. Have not had a chance to try the Nikon 28-300mm but almost positive Sigma or Tamron makes one close and at a much cheaper price.........

It would be the 8-1200 mm f/1.2 . Sorry. Can't wrap my head around "general photography". LOL
