That's a 650mm with a 2x add-on doubler.

let's cut to the chase, witth 50mm being standard for a ff sensor, it would take a 2500mm zoom lens to get 50x. how much for even a cheap plastic lens?

The bigger the sensor, the longer the lens for equivalent image magnification. For a FF sensor or maybe even an APS sensor you may have to open the window on the other side of the room for that much zoom.

What about a 18.8x zoom lens for your APS-C camera?

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2014/02/06/tamron-develops-16-300mm-f3-5-6-3-superzoom-for-aps-c-slrs

Tamron develops 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 superzoom for APS-C SLRs
Tamron has announced the development of an all-in-one 'superzoom' lens for APS-C SLRs with a huge 18.8x range. The 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro will offer an unusually wide angle view for its class (24-450mm equivalent), while also allowing close-up shooting with 0.34x magnification. It has an ultrasonic-type autofocus motor, splashproof construction and optical image stabilization. Pricing and availability are still to be announced.

Or 10x superzoom for FF cameras?

Tamron to make new 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 superzoom for full frame SLRs
Tamron has announced that it's developing a new 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD superzoom lens for full frame SLRs. A near-twin of the co-announced 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 for APS-C, it's distinguished from the current model by featuring an ultrasonic-type 'Piezo Drive' autofocus motor, splashproof construction and more-compact design with a 67mm filter thread. It'll be made in Canon, Nikon and Sony mounts; pricing and availability are to be confirmed.

And there's this monster:

Who’s Ready for a 100x Zoom PowerShot?

The future of the SX line?

Canon has patented a 100x zoom lens for compact cameras. It has a focal range of 3.6mm to 340mm. With the crop factor of 5.2 for a 1/2.3″ sensor, that’s about an 18mm-1768mm lens!

I’ve always thought 50x zoom wasnt enough in my bag, this is going to solve those issues! I expect to see a new SX series camera or two announced for CES 2014 in Las Vegas next month.
